Tragic Stampede Lairai Temple, at Shirgao (Goa) Claims Six Lives, Dozens Injured
During the annual Lairai Zatra at Shri Lairai Devi Temple in Shirgao, Goa, a devastating incident occurred. A stampede claimed the lives of at least six devotees. It left around 30 others injured in the early hours of Saturday. The incident unfolded around 3:00 am as thousands had gathered for the revered festival, which began on Friday evening.
The stampede may have been triggered according to initial reports. It happened when a devotee slipped on a steep slope near the temple’s approach road. The narrow, overcrowded path quickly turned into a site of panic as people rushed to escape the sudden surge. Authorities are still investigating the exact sequence of events.
Of those injured, at least 10 remain in critical condition and are being treated at Goa Medical College. Others have been admitted to the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa and the Bicholim Primary Health Centre. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed the deployment of additional medical staff. He also arranged a dedicated ICU for those requiring intensive care.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the hospitals to assess the situation firsthand and meet with victims. In a statement on social media, he expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He assured that every possible measure is being taken to support affected families. “I am personally monitoring the situation,” he stated, adding that an investigation has been launched.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences via social media. He expressed grief over the loss of lives and wished a swift recovery for the injured. “The local administration is assisting those affected,” he noted.
Over 1,000 police personnel were deployed. This included forces from the North Goa police, India Reserve Battalion, and Goa Reserve Police. Despite this, the event saw a breakdown in crowd control. Authorities are now reviewing protocols and procedures to prevent such incidents in future large gatherings.
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi found the incident “deeply saddening.” He extended his sympathies to the bereaved families. “I hope for the speedy recovery of all the injured,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Officials have committed to a thorough inquiry. They aim to understand the factors behind the tragedy. Additionally, they will identify any lapses in management or preparedness.
