Linked with the BJP for over three decades and has steadily risen through the party ranks.
In a strategic move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. They chose her over prominent contenders. This includes Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. Gupta is a first-time MLA and three-time councilor. She has been linked with the BJP for over three decades. She has steadily risen through the party ranks.
A Political Veteran with a Fresh Appeal
Despite being a first-time MLA, Gupta’s political career spans years of grassroots work. She won the Shalimar Bagh Assembly seat with a margin of nearly 30,000 votes. She has earlier served as a councilor. Rekha Gupta was also the mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). She served as the national vice president of the BJP Mahila Morcha.
Her leadership journey began in the 1990s. She was elected as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from Daulat Ram College. Since then, she has held various key positions in the Delhi BJP. She has established a reputation for her organizational skills and outreach.
Why BJP Picked Rekha Gupta as Delhi CM
By appointing Rekha Gupta, the BJP aims to strengthen its voter base, particularly among women. They also intend to draw a sharp contrast to AAP’s governance. Delhi has had a strong tradition of women chief ministers. Congress’ Sheila Dikshit led for 15 years. BJP’s Sushma Swaraj served briefly in 1998. Atishi, from AAP, was also CM for five months before the BJP’s recent victory.
The BJP’s decision aligns with its electoral strategy of empowering women in politics. In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the party fielded nine female candidates, four of whom won. Additionally, women voter turnout exceeded that of men, with 60.92% participation compared to 60.21%.
A Focus on Women-Centric Policies
The BJP’s manifesto for Delhi included several women-focused welfare measures. The party announced the Mahila Samridhi Yojana. It promised a monthly financial assistance of ₹2,500 to women. Additionally, the plan offers continued free bus travel. It also pledged ₹21,000 and six nutrition kits for every pregnant woman. Free cancer screenings in government hospitals are also provided under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
AAP had relied on its women voter base. It suffered a major setback in the elections. This allowed the BJP to secure a decisive victory with 48 out of 70 seats. The BJP’s focus on women voters was critical. Rekha Gupta’s non-controversial image also played an important role in shaping the party’s decision.

A Non-Controversial, Grassroots Leader
Unlike other contenders like Parvesh Verma and Ramesh Bidhuri, Rekha Gupta has managed to stay clear of major controversies. She has never contested a parliamentary election, making her an ideal fresh face to lead Delhi under the BJP’s governance.
With Gupta at the helm, the BJP aims to usher in a new political chapter in Delhi. The party is blending experience with a fresh leadership approach. This move’s long-term success depends on her effectiveness. She must deliver on the promises made to Delhi’s electorate.
