Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach of the Indian cricket team on 9th July, 2024. Before him, Rahul Dravid was the head coach of Team India from November 2021 to June 2024. Team India has completed 11 matches under Gambhir after the first test against England. Here is an analysis of the first 11 matches of both the coaches.
The India-England Test
Breaking records, this was the first time in history where Indian batters scored 5 centuries in a Test. But this is also the first time that the team that did so, lost. This was Shubhman Gill’s first test as team captain, and he also scored a century in his captaincy debut. However, this was Gambhir’s 11th test match as head coach. His record is vastly different from that of Rahul Dravid.

Losses pile up under Gambhir
After Gautam Gambhir became the head coach, the Indian cricket team lost against New Zealand at home. This was the first time New Zealand clean-swept the Indian team in India. India lost all three tests against them.
After this embarrassing defeat, Team India lost against Australia. Although it started with a win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, it lost the series 3-1. Now, India has had a bad start against England.
Gautam Gambhir’s first test series as a coach was against Bangladesh. Gambhir had a good start by winning both the matches. However, after this, his record deteriorated due to a series of continuous defeats.
India has played 11 test matches under Gambhir’s leadership. Out of these, India has lost 7 matches. It has won 3 matches and ended 1 match in a draw.
Rahul Dravid’s stats
Under Rahul Dravid as the head coach, Team India had won 7 out of the 11 first test matches. It lost 3 and ended 1 in a draw. It dominated against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Its performance at home was not just satisfactory but brilliant.
Although there were challenges then too. India began well by winning the first test against South Africa. However, they ended up losing the next two matches. They lost the series. India also lost in a rescheduled test against England. But against Bangladesh, the team won both the tests in 2022. Overall, the performance under Rahul Dravid was excellent.
An era changed when the head coach changed. Team India under Gambhir is still in choppy waters, but there is time yet to turn things around.
