From Setbacks to a Possible Leadership Role
Shreyas Iyer has finally broken his silence. There is growing speculation that he could be in line to replace Rohit Sharma as India’s next captain. The BCCI is reportedly considering Iyer for a leadership role in white-ball cricket. The stylish right-hander has spoken about his relationship with captaincy. It fuels his motivation.
Despite making his India debut back in 2017, Iyer’s journey has been anything but smooth. His performances in the 2023 World Cup cemented his place as a reliable middle-order batter. Then, a recurring back injury affected him. His exclusion from BCCI’s central contracts pushed him down the hierarchy. However, Iyer did not let these setbacks define him. He has made a strong comeback. His recent IPL form and domestic leadership stints have only added to his growing reputation.
An Experienced Leader with a Winning Track Record
Currently leading the Sobo Mumbai Falcons in the Mumbai T20 League, Iyer has guided the team into the semi-finals. This follows an outstanding IPL 2024 season. He played a key role in Punjab Kings’ campaign. Previously, he led Delhi Capitals to their first-ever final in 2020 and captained Kolkata Knight Riders to a title.
A senior BCCI official recently hinted that Iyer is in serious consideration for a future captaincy role. This consideration comes especially with Rohit Sharma nearing the twilight of his career. Iyer’s ability to lead under pressure and manage diverse squads makes him a natural contender.
‘Captaincy Demands Responsibility and Maturity’
Speaking on the sidelines of the T20 Mumbai League, Iyer shared how leadership has shaped him. He first began captaining teams at the age of 22.
“Captaincy brings a great deal of responsibility and growth. As a leader, you’re expected to step up, especially during challenging times. I’ve been leading sides since I was quite young, and I’ve really enjoyed it. I embrace the role—it makes me more accountable and pushes me to perform for the team,” Iyer said.
Motivated by Pressure and the Crowd
Now 30, Iyer also explained how he thrives in high-pressure situations. He plays in front of passionate fans and familiar teammates from his school and club cricket days. This environment brings him deeper motivation and joy in the game.
“I just try to stay present and focus on what’s in front of me. The energy from the crowd can be electric—it lifts you up. I often tell myself that I want to hear the crowd chant my name. That’s what drives me to give my best,” he said.
“It’s special to share the dressing room with teammates I’ve known from school and college cricket. There’s a great sense of belonging.”
A Strong Candidate for the Future
India is experiencing a generational shift in leadership. During this time, Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a strong contender once again. His experience and calm demeanor stand out. His tactical acumen, combined with a solid run of form, make him a compelling choice. India looks to build its next era in white-ball cricket.
