Mahakumbh 2025: Legal Action Against Fake News Spreaders

The administration has taken strict action against those spreading misleading posts and rumors related to Mahakumbh 2025. Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar has issued directives. As a result, social media platforms are being closely monitored. This is to prevent the spread of false information. Identified offenders are being subjected to legal action.

False Rumors Circulated on Social Media

During monitoring, we discovered that certain X accounts had shared an old video of an incident in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. They falsely linked it to the ongoing Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. The misleading posts claimed that devotees searched for their missing relatives at Mahakumbh. They were brutally beaten by the Yogi government’s police.

Fact-checking revealed that the video was from Dhanbad, Jharkhand. A local police lathi charge took place there on January 1, 2025. The Kumbh Mela police refuted these claims through their official account, clarifying that the video had no connection to Mahakumbh.

Attempt to Tarnish Uttar Pradesh Police’s Image

The administration viewed this as a deliberate try to defame the state government and the police while inciting public unrest. Fourteen X accounts responsible for spreading misinformation have been identified. A case has been registered at Kotwali Kumbh Mela police station. Legal proceedings have also been initiated against them.
