Tensions Rise at KIIT University After Nepali Student’s Tragic Death

The Nepali student community is particularly affected after the death of a Nepali girl in a hostel on campus.

A tragic incident at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar has sparked tensions among students. The Nepali student community is particularly affected after the death of a Nepali girl in a hostel on campus. The university administration confirmed that the student, allegedly in a relationship with a boy, took her own life. Authorities have taken the boy into custody and launched an investigation.

In response to the incident, protests erupted on campus, with some students blocking public roads for hours. The KIIT administration engaged in counseling and discussions for over 10 hours in a bid to restore order. Nevertheless, tensions remained high, leading the university to temporarily suspend academic classes and hostel stays for Nepali students.

As a precautionary measure, Nepali students have been advised to return home voluntarily with the approval of their local guardians. The university assured that academic schedules would not be disrupted for the affected students. It also promised that normalcy would be restored soon.

Amid growing concerns, Nepal’s former Prime Minister, K P Sharma Oli made an announcement. The Nepali Embassy in New Delhi has dispatched two officers. These officers will counsel the affected students. He also mentioned that arrangements were made. Students can choose to stay in their hostel or return home, based on their preference.

Yet, the response from the Nepali authorities has drawn criticism. Many on social media questioned if two embassy officials can adequately handle the concerns. Approximately 500 Nepali students are at KIIT.

The situation remains tense. Both Indian and Nepali authorities are closely monitoring developments. Their goal is to guarantee peace and justice for the affected students.
