Meets his counterparts from Russia, China at G20
In a powerful speech at the G20 session on the global geopolitical situation, External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, highlighted the urgent need for multilateral cooperation. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic dialogue. He also called for respect for international law in an increasingly fragmented world. Speaking in Johannesburg, South Africa, he urged world leaders to move beyond mere crisis management. He called for decisive steps to address major geopolitical issues. Economic challenges should also be tackled decisively. He met the Foreign Ministers of Russia, China and other partner nations at the summit.
A World in Turmoil
Dr. Jaishankar set the stage by acknowledging the global disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted the ongoing conflicts, economic strains, food security issues, and climate change concerns. However, he pointed out newer threats that demand immediate attention. These include the growing anxiety over concentrated supply chains, the weaponization of trade and finance, and transparency in data flows. He also highlighted the geopolitical implications of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles (EV). He discussed their impact alongside space exploration and the use of drones. The role of green hydrogen was also considered.
India’s Stand on Key Global Issues
The Middle East Crisis
Welcoming the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release, Dr. Jaishankar reiterated India’s condemnation of terrorism and its strong support for humanitarian assistance. Dr. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of a two-state solution to guarantee long-term peace in the region. Also insisted for the maintenance of the ceasefire in Lebanon. He urged for an inclusive resolution for Syria. He stressed that stability in the Middle East is crucial for global security.
Maritime Security and the Indo-Pacific
Dr. Jaishankar highlighted India’s commitment to safeguarding maritime security. This is especially true in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Indian Navy has played a critical role in these regions. He stressed the need to restore normal maritime commerce, which has been disrupted due to geopolitical tensions.
In the Indo-Pacific, he firmly stated that international law must be respected. This includes the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982. Agreements should be honoured, and coercion must not be tolerated. His remarks were seen as a clear signal against aggressive actions in the region.
The Ukraine Conflict and Global Conflicts
Dr. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s consistent stance on the Ukraine conflict, urging dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis. He emphasized that the global community expects the concerned parties to engage in direct negotiations to end the war.
Major conflicts include those in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan, and the Sahel region. He argued that they do not receive the international focus they deserve. Calling for a fairer distribution of global attention, he stressed that all conflicts must be addressed with equal urgency.
A Call for Multilateral Reforms
A significant portion of Dr. Jaishankar’s speech was dedicated to the need for reforming global governance institutions. He pointed out that the United Nations and its Security Council often face deadlocks. These deadlocks make them ineffective in responding to global crises. He urged changes in the Security Council’s structure. He stressed that working methods need revision. Multilateralism should be more inclusive and transparent.
He advocated for a shift from exclusive decision-making by a few powerful nations. He proposed a more pluralistic global governance approach. According to him, the global agenda should reflect the interests of all countries.
The Role of Diplomacy in Global Stability
Concluding his speech, Dr. Jaishankar reaffirmed that geopolitical realities and national interests will always exist. However, diplomacy’s core purpose is to build common ground and foster collaboration. He emphasized that International law and the UN Charter must be upheld. Differences should not escalate into disputes. Disputes should not turn into conflicts, and conflicts should not trigger large-scale breakdowns. He also emphasised that past experiences, especially from recent global challenges, should serve as lessons for future cooperation.
His speech was widely seen as a call for a more balanced and cooperative world order. Diplomacy, inclusivity, and multilateral reforms are to shape the future of global governance.
As India continues to assert itself as a key player in global diplomacy, Dr. Jaishankar’s address reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to fostering peace, stability, and development on the world stage.
