Behind Pakistan’s Sudden Ceasefire Appeal: What Prompted Shahbaz Sharif to Back Down?

Ceasefire Reached After Four Days of Escalation

After a sharp military escalation between India and Pakistan, both nations agreed to an immediate ceasefire on Saturday, May 10. The decision followed intense diplomatic efforts. The United States led these efforts. President Donald Trump announced the development via his social media platform. However, Pakistan breached the agreement within hours, triggering condemnation from Indian officials.

India’s Military Offensive Shifts the Balance

According to security sources, India’s swift and targeted airstrikes over the past four days played a decisive role in changing Pakistan’s stance. Under the ongoing Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force (IAF) launched coordinated strikes on four key Pakistani airbases: Murid Chakwal, Noor Khan (Rawalpindi), Rahim Yar Khan, and Rafiqui (Shorkot). These attacks reportedly crippled Pakistan’s radar and air defense infrastructure.

In a significant blow, India is said to have dismantled Pakistan’s air defense grid in Lahore. It reportedly neutralized aerial threats using its advanced S-400 missile system. This system intercepted multiple attempted drone and missile intrusions.

Pakistan’s Internal Pressure and Diplomatic Outreach

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif faced mounting pressure. He reportedly reached out to the United States. He sought intervention to halt the military confrontation. This appeal was communicated to Washington, prompting U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to initiate talks with Indian leadership. The diplomatic momentum culminated in the ceasefire announcement. India reiterated that any future provocation would be treated as an act of war.

Shehbaz Sharif’s Government Seeks De-escalation

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was alarmed by the pace and precision of India’s retaliation. He is believed to have appealed for calm. He emphasized the need for dialogue. Sources suggest that the scale of the damage was extensive. It particularly affected critical airbase infrastructure. This situation left the Pakistani leadership with few options but to seek a truce.

A significant development occurred at 3:35 PM on Saturday. Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) initiated a call to his Indian counterpart. They discussed halting hostilities. Both sides agreed to suspend further attacks, with another round of talks scheduled for May 12.

Pakistan Acknowledges Airbase Strikes

For the first time, Pakistan’s military officially acknowledged Indian strikes. Spokesperson Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry confirmed that Indian fighter jets launched air-to-surface missiles targeting three Pakistani airbases. While he described the operation as aggressive, he did not disclose specific details regarding the extent of the damage. Independent sources, however, report substantial destruction to runways, aircraft hangars, and drone command units.

India’s Strategic Posture Reinforced

The ceasefire followed India’s firm declaration of a new security doctrine. India stated that any future terror attack from across the border would be treated as an act of war. This shift represents a significant recalibration of India’s response strategy. It gives its armed forces a broader mandate to respond forcefully and decisively.

US Role in Defusing Tensions

President Trump publicly claimed credit for mediating the ceasefire. He noted that prolonged overnight negotiations led to the agreement, with the U.S. playing a critical role in bridging communication between New Delhi and Islamabad. The ceasefire terms depended on India’s insistence. India made clear that any further attacks would lead to immediate and forceful retaliation.
