India Repels Pakistani Strikes Amid Escalating Border Tensions

Blackouts, Counterstrikes Mark Sharp Escalation Along Western Border

Jammu/New Delhi — Hostilities have escalated significantly. Indian forces successfully thwarted a wave of Pakistani drone and missile attacks on Thursday night. These attacks occurred across multiple border states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. The strikes prompted India to impose blackouts in several regions along its western frontier. This was in response to heightened threats from Islamabad.

The sudden surge in cross-border attacks came just hours after India issued a stern warning to Pakistan. India advised against any further provocation. This warning followed its targeted military response—Operation Sindoor—on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Indian Defence Responds with Force

Indian forces successfully intercepted at least eight Pakistani missiles over Jammu’s Satwari, Samba, RS Pura, and Arnia sectors. Defence officials confirmed this using the advanced S-400 air defence system. Additional Pakistani-origin drones and missiles were neutralised over military stations in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, and Jalandhar.

“Indian Army reported no casualties or material losses in a statement. They added that the drone attacks were effectively repulsed and befitting reply was given to the CFVs.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that at least one Pakistani F-16 aircraft may have been shot down and a pilot captured. India reportedly launched counterstrikes using drones on military targets in Sialkot, Lahore, and possibly even Islamabad.

Security Establishment on High Alert

Top Indian security officials met to review the situation. This group included National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, and the three service chiefs. Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to leaders of India’s border guarding forces, including the Border Security Force (BSF).

At 11:00 pm on Thursday, the BSF reported having thwarted a major infiltration attempt. This occurred along the international border in Samba, Jammu.

Simultaneously, multiple drones and missiles were reportedly intercepted in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer and Gujarat’s Kutch region. No civilian or military casualties have been confirmed.

Air Raid Sirens and Blackouts Across Northern India

Cities from Jammu to Jaisalmer, and Amritsar to Chandigarh, witnessed air raid sirens and emergency blackouts. Visuals from several locations showed defensive systems lighting up the night sky as they intercepted incoming projectiles.

Earlier in the day, India said it had foiled attempted Pakistani strikes in 15 cities. They used a combination of anti-drone technology and air defence systems. Pakistan’s air defence system in Lahore was reportedly destroyed in retaliatory strikes.

Operation Sindoor: A Targeted Response

The latest confrontation follows India’s Operation Sindoor. It was launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The attack claimed 26 lives, including those of 24 Hindu tourists. India blamed Lashkar-e-Taiba’s proxy, The Resistance Front (TRF), for the attack.

The Indian military struck nine terror targets. Five were in PoK and four were deep inside Pakistan. The attacks used missiles and smart munitions deployed from both air and ground platforms. While India has not confirmed casualties, Pakistan claimed 31 dead and 46 injured.

Diplomatic Communications and Global Reactions

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, emphasising India’s “measured and proportionate response.” Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir arrived in New Delhi on an unscheduled visit.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar mentioned contact between the two countries’ national security advisers—a claim India later denied.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri made a clear statement. He said that “any further escalation by Pakistan will be met with an appropriate response.” This response will be in the domain of our choosing.

India’s Military Stance: Retaliation Without Escalation

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi briefed the media, affirming that India’s strikes were precise and non-escalatory. They reiterated that Indian forces had not targeted Pakistani military installations, but future strikes would depend entirely on Pakistan’s actions.

Indian armed forces used an array of advanced systems—including S-400 Triumf, Akash missiles, and Israeli-origin Harop drones—to neutralise incoming threats. Officials confirmed that debris from downed Pakistani drones and missiles had been recovered.

Historic Escalation Echoes 1971 Conflict

This confrontation marks the deepest Indian strike into Pakistan’s central Punjab since the 1971 war. Operation Sindoor surpasses even the post-Pulwama Balakot air strikes in 2019 and the retaliatory raids following the 2016 Uri attack.

The operation was named after the red sindoor. It symbolizes marital status among Hindu women. The operation paid tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam attack. These victims included a naval officer’s widow.

India’s military leadership made clear its stance. It remains committed to non-escalation. However, it will not hesitate to retaliate if provoked again.
