India-UK $468 Million Missile Deal: Strengthening Defence Capabilities

India and UK have finalised a $468 million deal under which the Indian army will receive 700 UK made missiles.

This deal will support India’s defence and attack capabilities in the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat. It will address the future requirements of the armed forces. The deal also aims for long-term collaboration on complex weapons between the two countries.

The announcement came on the second and final day of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s first official visit to India. The deal is also expected to cater for 700 jobs in Northern Ireland,England,Wales and Scotland.

The contract is set to deliver UK manufactured Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM) built in Belfast to the Indian Army. It will secure 700 jobs. The air defence missiles and launchers manufactured for India are the same as those produced in Ukraine.

The announced defence deals show the robust and growing partnership between India and the UK. This results in a deeper relationship between the two defence industries. LMM(Lightweight Multirole Missiles)

LMM are also known as Lightweight Multirole Missiles or Martlets. They are air-to-surface, air-to-air, surface-to-air, and surface-to-surface missiles. Belfast based defence contractor Thales Air Defence developed them. These missiles are also being used by Ukraine for air defence. They can strike various types of military platforms, including drones and armoured vehicles.
