No Oil Reaches Shore Yet
The MSC ELSA 3 container vessel sank off the Alappuzha coast. In response, Indian authorities have mounted a swift and coordinated effort. This is to prevent environmental damage. As of 1600 hrs on 27 May, officials confirmed that oil from the wreck has not yet reached the shoreline. This is due to proactive containment efforts.
Coast Guard Takes Charge
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has taken the lead in the response. They are issuing advisories to the Kerala state administration. The ICG is also initiating collaborative mitigation measures across various agencies. The ICG has deployed three Offshore Patrol Vessels. It has also deployed its dedicated pollution control ship, ICGS Samudra Prahari, to the affected area.
Aerial Surveillance in Full Swing
ICG Dornier aircraft from the Air Enclave in Kochi are flying daily aerial sorties. This is to monitor and assess the limited spill observed. These flights are critical for real-time evaluation of the situation and the strategic deployment of response assets.

Debris Washes Ashore
According to Kerala’s State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 46 containers have washed ashore across three coastal districts. The containers’ arrival aligns with current drift patterns influenced by ongoing weather conditions. Further debris is expected to reach land in the coming days.
Public and Responder Safety Advisories Issued
The SDMA has issued multiple advisories with guidelines. These are for local residents and emergency responders. They explain how to safely handle any cargo or debris found onshore. This move is aimed at minimizing harm and ensuring public safety during the cleanup process.
Surveillance and Coordination Ongoing
Efforts are also underway to track drifting containers still at sea. The Coast Guard is actively sharing intelligence with local administrations to help them prepare for potential landfall. Central and state agencies are holding coordination meetings regularly. They aim to maintain a united and effective front against this maritime environmental threat.
