VDG members from border areas trained to act as first responders
To enhance local security preparedness in border areas, 85 members of the Village Defence Guards (VDG) are in training. These members come from remote villages near the International Border (IB) in Jammu district. They are partaking in this programme to improve security. This training covers arms handling and minor battle tactics.
Hands-on weapon and tactical sessions
The trainees are being instructed in the operation of automatic rifles under the supervision of senior police personnel. They are also learning effective self-defence methods. Additionally, they are instructed in the construction of underground bunkers. The training also covers repelling infiltration attempts. This is crucial during the winter months. Cross-border movement and drone-based contraband drops become more frequent then.
Focus areas and participating regions
Participants have been drawn from Arnia, RS Pura, and Kanachak. These areas are all located close to the International Border. Villagers in these areas often face heightened threats due to cross-border firing and smuggling activities. Comprehensive training sessions are being conducted to ensure that VDGs remain alert. They need to be capable of acting as a first line of defence during any emergency.
Police leadership and objectives
The initiative was launched by SSP Jammu Joginder Singh. He emphasized the importance of empowering border residents. This empowers them to support security agencies during critical incidents. The SSP stated that the VDGs play a crucial role in assisting police and armed forces. They help until reinforcements arrive, particularly in isolated or vulnerable zones.
Part of broader winter security preparedness
Winter begins. This period is often marked by increased infiltration attempts and tunnel detection efforts along the border. The training aligns with the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s broader strategy to boost rural defence readiness. The VDGs are expected to act swiftly in the event of infiltration alerts. They should respond quickly to drone sightings or border skirmishes. This provides valuable local support to security forces.
