The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled a defence budget of ₹6.81 lakh crore for the financial year 2025–26, reflecting a 9.55% increase over the ₹6.2 lakh crore allocated in the ongoing fiscal year. This budget highlights the government’s strategic intent to enhance military preparedness. India remains in an unprecedented position of a standoff with China. The country is also countering the threats posed to the western borders with Pakistan. Besides the operational challenges,
the Ministry of Defence also has to look after its personnel, both active and retired.
A significant part of the budget, ₹3.11 lakh crore, has been allocated for revenue expenditure. This shows an increase from ₹2.83 lakh crore in 2024–25 and emphasizes the importance of maintaining operational readiness and sustaining ongoing activities. Revenue expenditure covers the costs of day-to-day operations of the armed forces. These include salaries, maintenance of equipment, ammunition, and other consumables. The increase indicates a persistent effort. The goal is to guarantee that India’s armed forces stay battle-ready. They must be capable of addressing emerging security challenges.
The capital outlay for 2025–26 has been set at ₹1.8 lakh crore, compared to ₹1.72 lakh crore in the previous fiscal year. This allocation is critical for the modernization of the armed forces and the procurement of advanced systems, equipment, and weaponry. The government emphasizes capital expenditure. This aligns with its broader strategy of building indigenous defence capabilities under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. This allocation is expected to boost the acquisition of next-generation platforms. These include fighter jets, submarines, and drones. It will also support infrastructure development for the armed forces. The budget allocation shows India’s intent to counter geopolitical challenges. India aims to maintain a strong strategic posture along the borders, including the LAC.
Another important aspect of the budget is the significant increase in the allocation for defence pensions. This allocation has risen from ₹1.41 lakh crore in 2024–25 to ₹1.6 lakh crore in 2025–26, marking a 13.5% rise. This allocation ensures financial security for retired defence personnel and their families. It highlights the government’s continued focus on the welfare of those who have served the nation. The rise in pension allocation also reflects the growing number of retirees. The government is intent on meeting its commitments under schemes like One Rank, One Pension.
The Ministry of Defence (Civil) has been allocated ₹28,682 crore for 2025–26, up from ₹25,963 crore in the prior year. This increase supports administrative and auxiliary functions crucial for effective defence management. These funds will be used for policy planning and research. They also support systems that enhance the overall efficiency of the defence forces.
The defence budget for 2025–26 shows an approach that addresses India’s strategic, operational, and welfare priorities.
