Post-Pahalgam Attack, India Vows Secure Amarnath Yatra: All Set for a Safe Pilgrimage

The Indian government and armed forces have reaffirmed their commitment in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. They are focused on ensuring the safety and sanctity of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Authorities have extensive security arrangements. They have a proactive strategy and are determined to prevent any disruption. They aim to provide a peaceful pilgrimage experience.

Anti-Terror Operations and Yatra Preparations in Full Swing

The Pahalgam terror incident and Operation Sindoor occurred. Following these events, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have intensified their operations against terrorist groups. Simultaneously, preparations for the Amarnath Yatra are progressing rapidly.

Lt. Gen. Prateek Sharma, Northern Army Commander, recently visited the 15 Corps (Chinar Corps) headquarters in Srinagar. He aimed to assess the readiness of forces on the ground. He reviewed both the regional security landscape and the detailed plans in place for the upcoming yatra.

Massive Security Deployment Planned

The Amarnath Yatra 2025 is scheduled to commence on July 3 and conclude on August 9, lasting 38 days. The first batch of pilgrims will depart from Srinagar on the opening day. Over 50,000 personnel from various security forces will be deployed to secure the pilgrimage. They will be stationed along the route, including at base camps and high-risk zones.

Key safety measures include:

  • 24×7 surveillance using CCTV cameras
  • Deployment of drones and helicopters for aerial monitoring
  • Digital mapping of all routes to track pilgrim movements
  • Digital identity cards for all pilgrims, pony riders, and service providers

Historical Pattern of Terror Threats

Since the 1990s, the Amarnath Yatra has been a target of multiple terror attacks. Historical incidents include:

  • 1993–1996: First wave of attacks on the yatra
  • 2000: A major strike at Pahalgam base camp resulted in 32 fatalities
  • 2001–2002: Grenade attacks near Sheshnag and at a passenger camp
  • 2006: A passenger bus was targeted
  • 2017: Attack on a pilgrim bus killed 7 and injured 32

After 2017, enhanced coordination among security forces significantly reduced threats—until the recent Pahalgam incident reignited concerns.

Integrated Security Measures for 2025 Yatra

The Indian Army, CRPF, and Jammu & Kashmir Police form a multi-agency framework. This framework is overseeing the execution of a robust security protocol. Measures include:

  • Route audits and identification of vulnerable points
  • Complete blockage of unauthorised access routes from national highways
  • Escort vehicles and jammer systems for convoys
  • Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), bomb disposal squads, K9 units, and drone surveillance
  • Mobile Police Control Rooms (PCRs) active along the entire route

These steps are designed to ensure quick response capabilities and real-time tracking of any suspicious activity.

Government’s Assured Support

The central and state governments have reiterated that ensuring the safety of pilgrims is a top priority. Security agencies also emphasize this commitment. All stakeholders are working together to ensure the devotees can undertake the yatra without fear. The administration provides complete logistical and safety support.
