Lighthearted Panchayat Season 4 switches to emotion-heavy storytelling

Panchayat, a Hindi comedy-drama web series, rose to the top in the favourites chart. It is now back with its 4th season. The latest season premiered on the OTT platform Amazon Prime Video on June 24. This was a week ahead of the original release date. The show revolves around the life of a Panchayat secretary. It has managed to draw in the crowds. It has impressed critics and touched hearts.

The Story

The story, rooted in Phulera village, is centred on political drama in this season. The elections are almost here, Manju Devi and Pradhan Ji face their challengers, Kranti Devi and Bhushan. Abhishek, who once tried to remain non-partisan, is actively campaigning for Manju’s party. It remains to be seen if the Pradhan can secure the election. Alternatively, his defeat might already be written in the cards.

Praise for the show

The show is known to do justice to its side characters. Season 2 gave a character arc to Prahlad, and this season gave one to Vinod. Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, Sunita Rajwar, Raghuvir Yadav, Faisal Malik, and Durgesh Kumar form an excellent cast. They channel the same charisma as before. The chemistry among the cast is a strong asset. Scenes such as the argument over laddoos provide intrigue. The uncomfortable dinner adds humour. The IT raid and the MLA’s cutting sarcasm offer moments that remind viewers why the series earned its place. But while the earlier seasons were known for their lighthearted comedy, this one was more emotional. Fans appreciated this, calling it a wholesome experience.

One fan wrote, “Binged the entire season, and I must say, #Panchayat4 remains as relatable and heartwarming as its predecessors. ❤️ This season skillfully blends comedy, emotion, and intense drama…”

Another wrote, “Panchayat Season 4 is not just a show it’s an institution of cinema. A masterclass in storytelling, screenplay & emotion. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry every frame speaks. Some victories don’t bring joy. Some victories hurt more than defeat. That’s real. That’s #Panchayat”

Criticism of this season

The lack of innocent and relatable moments has sadly made season 4 less appealing than its earlier parts. The simplicity of human emotions has given way to the intricate web of politics this time. The elections seem to have removed the joyous moments from Panchayat Season 4. The initial seasons delivered these moments along with a memorable sequence. The narrative does not feel as fresh.

Pradhan Ji has undergone a character arc. He was shown as a clever politician but a good person. However, in this season, he has become a vote-seeker employing populist measures to get back into power. If the aim was to present his flawed character, it was not fulfilled. The show instead has generated sympathy for the opposite side.
Bhushan and Kranti could have added more depth to the plot if they were portrayed as grey characters. Adding humility to their characters might have also helped.

The series stars Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, and Raghubir Yadav. It also stars Faisal Malik, Chandan Roy, Sanvikaa, and Durgesh Kumar. Additionally, Sunita Rajwar, Ashok Pathak, and Pankaj Jha are part of the cast. It is directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra.
