Who is Responsible for Delhi Station Stampede?

High influx of passengers set the stage for a rapid escalation in crowd congestion, ultimately leading to a mishap during the Mahakumbh rush

The Railway Board faced an unexpectedly large number of passengers. According to Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information & Publicity, this situation forced authorities to introduce four extra special trains. These measures were necessary to manage the surge.

Authorities received notifications early in the morning. Several individuals fainted due to the intense crowd pressure. Those affected were admitted to a local hospital. To control the situation, entry to the station was temporarily restricted to manage the overwhelming influx of passengers.

The critical moment unfolded on platform 14, where the Prayagraj Express was stationed. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railway), KPS Malhotra, explained that a large crowd was anticipated. Nonetheless, the situation worsened due to delays in the departures of the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani. This delay caused further congestion across platforms 12, 13, and 14. “We expected a large crowd, but everything escalated within a fraction of time,” he noted.

In response to the incident, a two-member high-level committee has been formed. Their task is to investigate the events that led to the mishap. Dilip Kumar confirmed that the situation is now under control. Passengers have been accommodated on special trains. Normal train operations have resumed at the station. The investigation aims to uncover the precise factors that contributed to the rapid escalation of crowd density. It also seeks to understand the following chaos. This will guarantee that future incidents can be prevented during peak travel periods.
