Centre Assures Citizens of Stable Supplies: ‘No Need for Panic Buying’

Essential Commodities, Fuel and Fertiliser Stocks Sufficient Across India, Say Officials

New Delhi — Tensions have heightened along the western border. In response, the central government on Friday reassured the public. India has ample reserves of essential commodities. These include food grains, fuel, and fertilisers. Authorities urged citizens, especially in northern states, not to panic buy. The supply chains in the country have not been disrupted.

The government held a series of high-level meetings with state officials and agricultural market representatives. Following these meetings, the government announced that transportation and logistics via road, rail, and air remain fully operational. Markets are replenished daily.

Supply Chains Operating Smoothly

“There is no disruption in the movement of goods. Cargo services across rail, road, and air continue to function normally,” a senior government official confirmed. Monitoring of nearly 500 key markets has shown that prices of essential items remain stable, with steady inflows of supplies.

India’s largest fuel retailer, Indian Oil Corporation, echoed the assurance. “Fuel and LPG are available across the country. There is absolutely no need for panic buying,” the company stated on X.

Ample Stocks to Meet Demand

The Food Ministry has confirmed that India currently holds over 66 million tonnes of food grains. This includes a recent procurement of more than 25 million tonnes of wheat. “Government stocks are plentiful, and no shortages have been reported,” said a senior food department official.

In response to concerns from the agricultural sector, an interministerial group reviewed the availability of fertilisers and cereals. Farmers are gearing up for the kharif sowing season. This season is critical to India’s food security.

Monitoring and Enforcement Measures in Place

Officials emphasized that the government remains in close contact with major agricultural market committees to deter hoarding and profiteering. If there are any disruptions, the government will invoke the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA). It did so during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the continued supply of critical goods.

“At present, there’s no cause for alarm. Supplies are stable and measures are in place to keep markets well-stocked,” the official reiterated.

Localised Hoarding Reported in Northern Cities

Despite official reassurances, reports of hoarding surfaced in cities like Jammu, Jaipur, and Srinagar. Residents there stocked up on essentials. They feared shortages due to the ongoing conflict with Pakistan.

These developments followed India’s precision strikes targeting terror infrastructure across the border, in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam attack. Pakistan’s subsequent missile and drone retaliation was “fully neutralised” by Indian forces, according to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Call for Calm and Vigilance

The Centre has urged citizens to remain calm, avoid speculative buying, and rely on official updates. “There is no shortage of food, fertilisers, or fuel. The country is fully prepared to maintain normalcy even in the face of external pressures,” the government affirmed.
