Major Oil Discovery in Ballia District
A significant crude oil reserve has been discovered near Sagarpali village in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh. This has sparked hopes of economic transformation for local landowners. The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has been conducting exploration activities in the region. It has confirmed the presence of oil deposits at a depth of 3,000 metres in the Ganga basin.
This discovery holds special historical significance. The oil reserve was found on land belonging to the family of freedom fighter Chittu Pandey. ONGC has leased six-and-a-half acres from the Pandey family for three years, with an annual payment of ₹10 lakh. The drilling, which requires 25,000 litres of water daily, is progressing swiftly, with completion anticipated by April-end.
Expansion Plans: Drilling Across the Ganga Basin
If the current excavation proves successful, ONGC plans to expand drilling operations to other identified sites within the Ganga basin. The discovered oil reserve extends 300 km from Sagarpali in Ballia to Phaphamau in Prayagraj. It has the potential to benefit thousands of farmers in the region.
Landowner Neel Pandey is a descendant of Chittu Pandey. He revealed that ONGC has the option to extend the lease for another year. If the exploration yields commercial quantities of crude oil, ONGC will acquire surrounding lands. They will pay high prices, significantly improving the financial prospects of local farmers.
India’s Crude Oil Reserves and ONGC’s Role
As of April 2021, India’s estimated crude oil reserves stood at approximately 587.335 million metric tonnes, with the largest deposits located in the western offshore region, Assam, and Gujarat.
Established in 1956, ONGC has been at the forefront of India’s oil exploration and production. It has played a key role in developing major fields like Mumbai High, which remains India’s largest oil field. In 2024, ONGC announced five new oil and gas discoveries. These discoveries are both onshore and offshore. This is part of its ongoing efforts to increase domestic production and reduce oil imports.
The discovery in Uttar Pradesh marks another significant milestone in India’s journey toward energy security. It also promises economic upliftment for the local farming community. If successful, this project could pave the way for further oil explorations across North India. This would boost the country’s self-reliance in crude oil production.
