Tensions are escalating between India and Pakistan after the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. In response, Pakistan has appointed Lieutenant General Mohammad Asim Malik as its new National Security Advisor (NSA). He is the head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The decision comes during a period of growing regional instability and diplomatic unease.
Dual Role for ISI Head Amid Security Crisis
According to The Express Tribune, Lt Gen Asim Malik has been given additional responsibilities as the NSA. He retains his position as the Director General of the ISI. A formal notification confirming the appointment was issued on Wednesday. Malik assumed charge as ISI chief in September 2024. Now, he is one of the most influential figures in Pakistan’s security establishment.
Strategic Succession Planning in Pakistan’s Military
The move is also seen as a significant step in the Pakistan Army’s internal succession planning. Both Lt Gen Malik and the current Army Chief General Asim Munir are expected to retire in late 2025. Malik’s tenure will end in October. Munir’s tenure will conclude in November. Analysts suggest this dual appointment might position Malik as a key player in the transition of military leadership.
India Reacts to Pahalgam Carnage with Stern Measures
India has responded strongly to the April 22 terror strike in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 fatalities. In the aftermath, New Delhi restructured its National Security Advisory Board (NSAB). It appointed former R&AW head Alok Joshi to lead it. India has taken several actions. It has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and expelled Pakistani military personnel. It also closed its airspace to Pakistani aircraft and shut down the Attari-Wagah border crossing.
Panic in Islamabad and Diplomatic Outreach
Reports suggest a state of alarm within Pakistan’s government and military following India’s reaction. Islamabad has reportedly relocated militants supported by it into safe zones. It has rushed troops to the India border and sent delegations to foreign capitals. These actions are in a bid to avert escalation. Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar even alleged that Indian strikes could occur within 24 to 36 hours, citing “credible intelligence.”
Pakistan’s Cautious Warnings and Nuclear Posturing
In statements shared online, Pakistani officials warned of a strong response to any military action from India. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated in an interview that Pakistan is on alert. Nuclear weapons would only be considered in the face of an existential threat.
Controversy Over Responsibility for the Attack
The Resistance Front (TRF) is a proxy of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba. The group initially claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam incident. However, they later retracted the statement. The withdrawal has raised suspicions of pressure from Pakistani authorities to suppress the group’s involvement.
Indian Leadership Vows Retaliation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conducted multiple high-level meetings with his national security team. He has pledged to track down those responsible for the attack and their supporters. He stated that justice will be pursued “to the ends of the earth.”
