India has issued a strong rebuttal to recent comments made by Bangladeshi officials concerning developments in West Bengal. They called the remarks misleading. India stated it was an attempt to divert attention from domestic human rights issues in Bangladesh.
MEA Criticizes Dhaka’s Comments
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal issued a statement on Friday. He dismissed the remarks from Bangladesh as “disingenuous.” He emphasized that India does not accept external interference in its internal matters.
“We categorically reject the statements made by the Bangladesh side regarding incidents in West Bengal. Jaiswal stated that these comments are a deliberate attempt. They equate them with India’s legitimate concerns about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh.”
He added that instead of making baseless observations, Dhaka should prioritize the protection of its minority communities.
Context of Rising Tensions
The response from New Delhi follows media reports. These reports indicate that certain Bangladeshi representatives had voiced concern over recent unrest in West Bengal. Details were not officially specified. It is believed the reference involves recent communal disturbances. It also involves political violence in some parts of the Indian state.
India’s Long-Standing Concerns
India has consistently raised the issue of minority rights in Bangladesh. This is especially true after attacks on Hindu temples and incidents of communal violence. The Bangladeshi government has offered reassurances. Despite this, reports of such incidents continue to surface. These reports draw condemnation from civil society and international observers.
Dhaka’s Repeated Denials
The government of Bangladesh has routinely dismissed accusations of systemic persecution. It asserts that all citizens are treated equally under the law. Nevertheless, India and international human rights organizations have expressed concern. They observe recurring violence during religious festivals. They also note other targeted acts as causes for concern.
Firm Stance from New Delhi
India’s response underscores its growing unease over foreign commentary on its domestic affairs, particularly from neighboring nations. The MEA’s sharp reaction reflects an insistence. Legitimate concerns over human rights should not be diluted. The MEA views them as politically motivated deflections.
