The Bihar government has taken a major step before elections. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a new initiative. The government will provide free electricity up to 125 units to the general public.
Relief to 1.67 Crore Families
The decision will bring relief to the general public and has been welcomed by them. It will come into effect on August 1, 2025.
In a post on X, the CM himself shared the good news. “We have been providing electricity to everyone at cheap rates since the beginning. Now all domestic consumers of the state will not have to pay any fee for electricity up to 125 units. This decision has been made for their benefit.”
About 1 crore 67 lakh families will directly benefit from this decision of Nitish government. It will especially benefit the poor and the middle class.
The CM also said that the government will take consent from all domestic consumers over the next three years. They will install solar panels on their roofs or at nearby public places.

Solar Panels for the Poor
The CM said, “Under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana, the state government will bear the entire cost. They will set up solar power plants for extremely poor families. As a result, domestic consumers will no longer have to spend up to 125 units of electricity.” An estimate indicates that up to 10 thousand megawatts of solar energy will be available in the state. This capacity will be achieved in the next three years.”
The state is optimistic that these efforts will reduce the cost of energy consumption. They are also expected to increase the capacity of solar power generation. 10,000 MW of solar energy is expected to be generated in the next three years, helping ease the energy crisis.
Major Pre-Poll Promises
In poll-bound Bihar, Mr. Kumar has so far made several big announcements, and free electricity is one of them. Earlier, on July 16, Mr. Kumar asked the Education Department to prepare for the fourth installment of the Teacher Recruitment Exam (TRE). This exam is organized by the Bihar Public Service Commission. In this installment, they would recruit more than one lakh teachers.
On July 13, 2025, he promised to provide jobs to one crore youths in the next five years. He assured employment opportunities during 2025 to 2030. Last month, Mr. Kumar increased the pension to ₹1100 per month. This was an increase from ₹400. The increase was under the Social Security Scheme for the old age, differently-abled individuals, and widows of Bihar.
Notably, Bihar is scheduled to have assembly elections in October or November this year. However, the Election Commission has not released the dates yet.
