PM Modi Raises Concerns Over Hindu Safety in Bangladesh During Meeting with Muhammad Yunus in Bangkok
The Indian government has confirmed this. Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns about the safety of minorities. He brought this up during his meeting with Bangladesh’s Interim Advisor, Muhammad Yunus, in Bangkok. He was particularly worried about Hindus in Bangladesh. The discussion primarily focused on the status of minorities in Bangladesh, with PM Modi expressing deep concerns over the issue.
PM Modi and Muhammad Yunus met in Thailand during the BIMSTEC Summit. They engaged in a bilateral discussion on key regional matters. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the meeting covered various topics. These included India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, stable, and peaceful Bangladesh. India also supports a progressive Bangladesh. PM Modi also reiterated India’s desire to build stronger and more decisive relations with Bangladesh. Additionally, discussions touched upon Sheikh Hasina’s situation, though no official statements were made regarding this matter.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that PM Modi emphasized the need to avoid rhetoric that could unnecessarily strain bilateral relations. The Indian government has expressed concerns repeatedly. They are worried about attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. They urge their neighbor to ensure security and rights.
The meeting between the two leaders took place amid controversies surrounding Muhammad Yunus’ visit to China. During his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Yunus reportedly made statements. He suggested that Bangladesh is the sole guardian of the regional waters. He indirectly emphasized China’s potential for investment in the country. His remarks allegedly highlighted India’s geographical limitations. He pointed out that the Northeastern states, known as the Seven Sisters, are landlocked. These states depend on Bangladesh for access to the sea.
This discussion between PM Modi and Muhammad Yunus marks the first high-level interaction. It is the first such meeting since the August 5, 2024, political upheaval in Bangladesh. This upheaval led to the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Since then, Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India, adding a new dimension to India-Bangladesh diplomatic engagements.
