Sonam Raghuvanshi: Accused of Murder in Meghalaya Honeymoon Case

The mysterious death of a newlywed man from Madhya Pradesh while honeymooning in Meghalaya has taken a shocking turn. The deceased’s wife is Sonam Raghuvanshi. She has been accused of hiring contract killers to murder her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi. Her family vehemently denies this claim.

Family Defends Sonam, Accuses Meghalaya Police of Fabrication

Speaking to reporters, Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, declared his daughter’s innocence, dismissing the police’s version of events as false. He asserted that the couple had married with full familial support and accused Meghalaya authorities of “spreading lies.”

“My daughter cannot do something like this. We’re planning to approach the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister. We intend to contact Union Home Minister Amit Shah. We will request a CBI probe,” Singh stated. He suggested that state police officers should themselves be investigated.

Contradictory Accounts of Surrender and Arrest

There are conflicting reports regarding Sonam’s detention. Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang stated that Sonam surrendered at the Nandganj police station in Uttar Pradesh. After her surrender, she was arrested. However, her father refuted this. He claimed she voluntarily appeared at a dhaba (roadside eatery) in Ghazipur. She then called her brother and was taken into custody.

“She went to a dhaba and informed her family. Police came and picked her up—this wasn’t an arrest in Meghalaya as claimed,” said her father.

Victim’s Brother Questions Arrest Claims

Raja Raghuvanshi’s brother, Vipin, challenged reports that Sonam had either surrendered or been arrested. He alleged that no proper interrogation had taken place and said claims made by the DGP were premature.

“She called our relative and even made a video call. After confirming her identity, we informed UP Police. She was calmly sitting, not hiding or on the run,” Vipin shared.

Meghalaya Police: Murder Was Pre-Planned

Meghalaya Police maintain that the murder was orchestrated by Sonam, who allegedly hired three individuals from Madhya Pradesh. One suspect was detained in Uttar Pradesh, while two others were arrested in Indore.

“The investigation is ongoing, and more suspects are being tracked down,” said DGP Nongrang. “The arrested individuals have named Sonam as the person who commissioned the crime.”

UP Police Yet to Interrogate Sonam

According to ADG Law and Order of Uttar Pradesh, Amitabh Yash, Sonam has not yet been questioned by UP authorities. She is currently in protective custody and will be handed over to Meghalaya Police upon their arrival.

“She informed her family around 3 AM from the Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur route. We took her to a hospital and then to the One Stop Centre,” said the UP official.

Meghalaya CM Praises Quick Police Action

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma applauded his police department for solving the case in under a week. He confirmed the arrest of three accused and stated that Sonam had surrendered.

“Within 7 days, the police have cracked a major case. The search continues for one more suspect,” Sangma posted on X (formerly Twitter), commending the state force.

Timeline of the Case: From Disappearance to Discovery

The couple had gone missing while visiting Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya during their honeymoon. When calls went unanswered, concerned family members travelled to the state, prompting a large-scale search operation.

Rescue teams, drones, and multiple agencies participated. Eventually, Raja’s body was found in a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls. A dao (machete) was nearby. It is believed to be the murder weapon.

An SIT (Special Investigation Team) led by East Khasi Hills SP Herbert Kharkongor was formed to probe the incident. CCTV footage and other leads pointed toward a premeditated act.

Ongoing Investigation: More Arrests Likely

With Sonam now in custody and three accused apprehended, the case continues to unfold. Authorities believe additional individuals may have been involved. They are extending their investigation beyond Meghalaya. The investigation now reaches into Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

As political calls for a CBI inquiry gain momentum, the case captures wide attention. It remains one of the most sensational murder mysteries of recent times.
