Tragedy Strikes Vadodara: Gambhira Bridge Collapse Claims 13 Lives Amid Ignored Warnings

Vadodara, Gujarat – A devastating bridge collapse in Vadodara on Wednesday morning has left at least 13 people dead. The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage. Local leaders had been sounding the alarm on the Gambhira Bridge’s structural integrity since as early as 2021. Harshad Sinh Parmar is a Vadodara district panchayat member from Mujpur village. He made a formal request to the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department in August 2022. Harshad asked them to declare the bridge unsafe and restrict vehicular movement. He even explicitly stated that authorities would be held responsible for any loss of life.

The urgency of Parmar’s warnings intensified after the tragic Morbi bridge collapse in October 2022, which killed 135 people. He sent multiple reminders to both the R&B department and the district collectorate. Parmar highlighted visible vibrations in the bridge’s pillars. He demanded the public release of its condition report. Disturbingly, authorities reportedly offered no transparency, simply stating the matter was “under consideration.”

Conflicting Reports and Calls for Transparency

In the wake of the collapse, statements from the R&B Department have only fueled further questions. N.M. Naykawala is the Executive Engineer of the R&B Department. He claimed that a departmental inspection had found no major structural issues. He stated, “Only the bearings had issues, and they were repaired last year.”

However, this assertion has been sharply contradicted by Lakhan Darbar, an RTI activist and local leader. Darbar revealed that a 2022 report had, in fact, deemed the bridge unsafe and unfit for use. “The testing report was negative, but never disclosed. For three years, the bridge was allowed to operate. It was a danger,” he alleged. He pointed to a potential cover-up and gross negligence.

Government Response and Future Steps

The tragic incident was discussed in a cabinet meeting. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel chaired the meeting. He has demanded an explanation from R&B officials. A team of government and private structural experts has visited the collapse site. Their detailed report is eagerly awaited. It will help to determine accountability.

The government has approved ₹212 crore for the reconstruction of the Gambhira Bridge as a long-term measure. The project is reportedly in the tendering stage. This is a welcome step. However, concerns persist regarding the delays. There is also concern about the overall accountability in the management of public infrastructure across the state.
