Visit of Wang Yi to India: Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Mr Wang Yi, Member of the Politburo of the Communist Party, visited India as China’s Foreign Minister. His visit occurred on 18th & 19th August. During the visit he met PM Modi, NSA Ajit Doval and MEA S. Jaishanker. This visit marks a significant move. It strengthens ties between two nations. Both countries play a pivotal role in the global diaspora.

PM Invited to SCO Summit

Wang Yi handed over a message from President Xi to the Prime Minister. He also gave an invitation for the SCO Summit being held in Tianjin. Prime Minister thanked President Xi for the invitation to the SCO Summit and conveyed his acceptance. He expressed support for China’s Presidency of the SCO Summit. He said that he looked forward to meeting President Xi in Tianjin. PM underlined that stable, predictable, and constructive ties between India and China are essential. They will contribute significantly to regional peace. Moreover, they are crucial for global peace and prosperity.

Prime Minister emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility on the border. He reiterated India’s commitment to a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.
Prime Minister welcomed the steady progress in bilateral ties. This progress has been positive since his meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year. This progress is guided by mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity. It includes the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.

Meeting with NSA

Minister Wang co-chaired the 24th round of the Special Representatives’ dialogue on the Boundary Question between India and China. He did so with the National Security Advisor, Shri Ajit Doval. This meeting took place on 19 August 2025.

The two sides spoke positively of the progress made in the implementation of the important leader-level consensus in Kazan. The two sides shared the view that peace and tranquility have been maintained in the India-China border areas. This has been the case since the 23rd SR Talks. They stressed the need to keep peace and tranquility in the border areas. This emphasis is crucial to promote overall development of the India-China bilateral relationship.

Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, the two sides engaged positively. They had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on India-China boundary question.

The two sides agreed to take a political perspective of the bilateral relationship. They also aim to create a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable framework for settling the boundary question. This will follow the Agreement on Political Parameters. Guiding Principles for Settlement of the India-China Boundary Question were signed in 2005.

Expert Group for Border Management

An Expert Group will be set up under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC). This group will explore Early Harvest in boundary delimitation in the India-China border areas. A Working Group will operate under the WMCC. The objective is to advance effective border management. This is essential to maintain peace and tranquillity in India-China border areas.

Border management mechanisms will be used at diplomatic and military levels. They will carry forward the process of border management. Discussions will focus on de-escalation. They will begin with the principles and modalities.

The two sides also agreed to hold the next round of the SR Talks in China. They will do so at a mutually convenient time.

Bilateral Discussions with External Minister

In the meeting with the External Affairs Minister, the two sides had positive and constructive discussions. They looked to the future on bilateral, regional, and international issues of common interest. They reached several understandings and concrete steps on people-centric and economic engagement.

Both sides emphasized the strategic guidance of Indian and Chinese leaders. This guidance plays a crucial role in developing India-China relations. They agreed that a stable, cooperative, and forward-looking relationship between India and China benefits both countries. This is in their mutual interest to fully realize their development potential. They further agreed that both sides should earnestly implement the important common understandings. These understandings were reached between the two leaders. They aim to promote sustained, sound, and steady development of India-China relations.

Both nations have agreed to support each other in hosting successful diplomatic events. Chinese side will support India in hosting the 2026 BRICS Summit. Indian side will support China in hosting the 2027 BRICS Summit.

Bilateral dialogue mechanisms and exchanges will be initiated. They aim to enhance cooperation and address each other’s concerns. Proper management of differences will be ensured. This includes holding the Third Meeting of the India-China High-level Mechanism on People-to-People Exchanges in India in 2026.

Enhance Connectivity, Co-operation, and Communication

Direct flights will resume between the Chinese mainland and India to enhance connectivity. The aim is to achieve this at the earliest. There is also a goal to finalize an updated Air Services Agreement. They agreed to facilitate visas for tourists, businesses, media, and other visitors in both directions.

Expansion of the scale of the Indian pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash/ Gang Renpoche and Lake Manasarovar / Mapam Yun Tso in Tibet Autonomous Region of China starting 2026.

They discussed trans-border rivers cooperation. They agreed to enhance the role of the India-China Expert Level Mechanism on Trans-border Rivers. Communication will continue on renewing the relevant MoUs. The Chinese side agreed to share hydrological information during emergency situations based on humanitarian considerations.

Boost to Trade Relations

Border trade to re-open through the three designated trading points, namely Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La Pass and Nathu La Pass.

Both sides agreed to facilitate trade and investment flows between the two countries through concrete measures. Both the ministers assured on behalf of their respective nations to uphold multilateralism. They will enhance communication on major international and regional issues. Both nations aim to maintain a rules-based multilateral trading system with WTO at its core. They also intend to promote a multipolar world that safeguards the interest of developing countries.
