Anaya Bangar, daughter of former Indian cricketer and ex-batting coach Sanjay Bangar, has opened up about facing harassment. This harassment comes from within the cricketing community after her gender transition. In a deeply personal interview, she revealed receiving unsolicited nude photos and enduring inappropriate advances from fellow cricketers.
A Journey of Courage and Pain
Anaya, who was earlier known as Aryan before transitioning, shared her experiences in an interview. She discussed the highs and lows of her transition journey. Her experiences included moments of support from the cricketing circle. There were also instances of abuse and misconduct.
“There has been support, but also harassment. Some cricketers randomly sent me nude pictures,” she said, emphasizing the emotional toll that accompanied her transformation.
Facing Harassment from Peers and Veterans
Anaya highlighted how the harassment wasn’t limited to online behavior. She alleged that several players used derogatory language. Some of these players are currently active in domestic and international cricket. They sent inappropriate messages. In one disturbing case, a player propositioned her for sex.
“I had to hide my identity while playing because of my father’s reputation,” Anaya recalled. “The cricket world is full of insecurity and toxic masculinity. One veteran cricketer even said to me, ‘Let’s go in the car—I want to sleep with you.’”
She mentioned sharing the field with well-known cricketers like Yashasvi Jaiswal. She shared the field with Sarfaraz Khan and Musheer Khan during her earlier days as Aryan. “I had to pretend to be someone I wasn’t. It was suffocating,” she said.
Calls for Inclusion and Respect in Cricket
Beyond sharing her personal trauma, Anaya used the platform to call for greater inclusivity. She also advocated for sensitivity toward transgender individuals in sports. “We don’t just need policy changes. We need a shift in mindset,” she urged.
Her revelations come at a time when the global cricketing community is debating the participation of transgender athletes. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently revised its eligibility rules, restricting trans women from competing at the highest levels. Similarly, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has also implemented tighter restrictions in domestic competitions.
A Much-Needed Conversation
Anaya Bangar’s voice adds urgency to the ongoing discussions around gender identity and equality in sports. Her story exposes the undercurrent of misogyny and transphobia in cricket. It also highlights the resilience it takes to live authentically in such a space.
As cricket continues to evolve, voices like Anaya’s may pave the way for a more inclusive future. In this future, talent is celebrated. Identity is respected.
