Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has expressed profound disappointment. This follows the decision to remove his name from the North Pavilion Stand at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Calling the move unjust and disheartening, Azharuddin urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to intervene.
Ethics Complaint Triggers Name Removal
The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) was directed to strip Azharuddin’s name. The Ethics Officer and Ombudsman, Justice V Eswaraiah, made this decision. This action followed a formal petition by Lord’s Cricket Club. The complaint alleged Azharuddin engaged in activities involving a conflict of interest during his tenure as HCA president. It accused him of favouritism. It also accused him of misuse of authority.
Azharuddin Responds: “I Sometimes Regret Playing Cricket”
Visibly shaken, Azharuddin voiced his emotional turmoil. He said, “At times, I regret having played cricket.” He lamented that those unfamiliar with the sport now hold power over its governance while criticizing the decision as a disgrace. Azharuddin declared his intent to take legal action and also pointed to broader administrative issues within the HCA.
Broader Implications During IPL 2025
The directive also prohibits the use of Azharuddin’s name on match tickets. This applies to the remaining IPL 2025 games at the venue. This includes three Sunrisers Hyderabad home fixtures and crucial playoff matches. The controversy adds to ongoing tensions between the franchise and the HCA over ticketing and access.
Allegations of Retaliation and Appeal for Justice
Azharuddin further alleged that he was barred from contesting HCA elections. He claimed it was due to his efforts to expose internal corruption. He suggested his outspokenness made him a target.
Proposal to Rename Stand After VVS Laxman
The petition also recommended renaming the stand in honour of another cricketing legend from Hyderabad, VVS Laxman. It requested official adoption of the name “VVS Laxman Pavilion” across all materials and signage related to the stadium.
Call for Fairness in Cricket Administration
The petitioner urged the Ombudsman to issue any additional orders required to uphold fairness and transparency. Azharuddin’s plea and the broader concerns raised in the complaint highlight persistent governance issues in state-level cricket administration.
