This is despite him retiring four years ago. “That shows how influential he was. It was not just for the team. He was influential for me personally and for the fans in Bengaluru.”

As pacer Josh Hazlewood began defending 28 runs in the final over, Kohli noticed de Villiers. He was standing just beyond the boundary. De Villiers was preparing for post-match broadcast duties. He admitted that catching a glimpse of his old teammate during that decisive moment made the victory even more meaningful.
