Shubhman Gill’s Consecutive Tons Break Records

Shubhman Gill’s captaincy debut in test cricket is a delightful, record-breaking sequence of matches. The young skipper scored a century in both his first and his second test match as captain. His controlled ton against England was nothing short of a brilliant, artistic performance.

Records Galore

  • Gill has joined the ranks of elite captains like Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli with this century. He has become the fourth Indian captain to hit consecutive tons in two Test matches.
  • He also joined the list of most centuries by an Indian captain in England. This list includes the likes of Mohammad Azharuddin and Virat Kohli. He achieved this with two centuries.
  • Further, he has entered the list of Indian batsmen who scored centuries in three consecutive Tests against England. This list includes Mohammad Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid, and now, Shubhman Gill.
  • Gill has also surpassed the legendary MS Dhoni in most centuries in international cricket. The former has 15 international tons to his name, while Gill hit his 16th at Edgbaston.
  • He has become the 9th visiting captain to score centuries in both the first Test and the second Test of a series in England. This achievement places him among the ranks of Don Bradman, Garfield Sobers, and Graeme Smith.

At the end of day 1 of the second match in the test series, India stood at 310/5. Shubhman Gill remained unbeaten with 114 for 216, joined by Ravindra Jadeja with 41 for 67 deliveries. There has been a partnership of 99 runs between the two for the sixth wicket. Initially, Gill stitched an important partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who departed after 87 runs. Later on, Gill and Pant looked strong in the middle, but the latter departed for 25. While wickets fell on the other end, Gill remained a stable and sure presence in this match.

The team will want to add 200 more to the innings to finish strong. The tailenders would have to contribute better than they did at Headingley.
