Lifelong Financial Assistance from CHAMPS Foundation
Gavaskar’s CHAMPS Foundation was established in 1999 to aid former international sportspersons in need. It will offer Kambli a monthly stipend of ₹30,000 for life. This begins on April 1. In addition, the foundation has committed an annual sum of ₹3 lakh to cover Kambli’s medical expenses.
This lifeline follows a heartfelt interaction at the Wankhede Stadium’s 50th anniversary celebration earlier this year. During this event, an emotional Kambli touched Gavaskar’s feet. This moment went viral online.
Health Struggles and Gavaskar’s Swift Response
Kambli, now 53, was hospitalized for two weeks in December due to a severe urinary infection. His condition drew public concern. Videos emerged showing him struggling to walk. Later, he was seen clinging emotionally to his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar during a public reunion.
Dr. Shailesh Thakur is a devoted fan. He is also the director of Akruti Health City Hospital in Thane. He played a key role in Kambli’s treatment. Gavaskar, after learning of Kambli’s deteriorating health, met with his doctors and initiated the support through his foundation without delay.
A Career of Brilliance and Turmoil
Vinod Kambli, once regarded as one of India’s most talented left-handed batsmen, made his international debut in 1993. He played in 17 Tests. In these matches, he famously scored two back-to-back double centuries. In addition, he participated in 104 ODIs. He amassed 1,084 Test runs and 2,477 ODI runs.
Despite a promising start, his career and life post-cricket were marred by controversies, including legal troubles and recurring health issues. According to reports, Kambli has undergone rehabilitation nearly 15 times due to substance abuse. These factors, combined with medical expenses, are believed to have severely impacted his finances.
Gavaskar’s Ongoing Commitment to Fellow Cricketers
Kambli becomes only the second former Indian cricketer to receive monthly assistance from the CHAMPS Foundation. The first was the iconic all-rounder Salim Durani.
Gavaskar’s intervention has been hailed by fans and cricketing circles alike, offering hope and dignity to a fallen star. A visibly moved Kambli conveyed his thanks in a video shared by his wife, Andrea Hewitt. He said, “Thank you to Sunil Gavaskar. Namaskar.”
