Artillery Crisis: Ammo Stockpiles of Pakistan May Last Only Four Days in War

Military Readiness at Risk Amid Ammo Shortage

In a potential military conflict with India, Pakistan may be able to sustain operations for only four days. This is due to critically low artillery ammunition reserves. This information comes from a report by news agency ANI citing defense sources. The report paints a dire picture of Pakistan’s current military preparedness. It raises questions over its capacity to handle a prolonged high-intensity confrontation.

Ammunition Depletion Worsened by Ukraine Arms Transfers

Sources revealed that Pakistan’s ammunition stockpile, particularly 155mm artillery shells essential for its M109 howitzers, has been significantly drained. One major reason cited is the export of large volumes. These were artillery shells sent to Ukraine as part of recent arms deals. Social media discussions from April 2025 pointed to a substantial transfer of such ammunition. This has now left Pakistan’s artillery and self-propelled gun systems inadequately equipped.

This depletion severely undercuts Pakistan’s conventional military doctrine. The doctrine heavily depends on rapid deployment and artillery firepower. These are used to counterbalance India’s larger forces.

Old Infrastructure and Soaring Demand Hamper Replenishment

Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) are responsible for producing the country’s munitions. They are reportedly struggling to meet demand. The struggle is due to outdated manufacturing infrastructure and a global surge in demand for ammunition. With existing production facilities underperforming, restocking efforts are lagging behind operational requirements.

Leadership Concerned, Urgent Talks Held

Pakistan’s military leadership reportedly discussed the ammunition crisis during a Special Corps Commanders Conference on May 2, 2025. Insiders indicate that the mood within the top brass is one of serious concern, bordering on alarm.

Former Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, had previously acknowledged these shortcomings. He highlighted both the inadequate ammunition supply and Pakistan’s limited economic means. These factors hinder sustaining a prolonged conflict with India.

Economic Woes Adding to Military Constraints

Pakistan’s overall defense preparedness has also been compromised by its deepening economic troubles. High inflation, dwindling foreign exchange reserves, and rising debt have forced the army to reduce rations. They have also suspended military drills and canceled scheduled war games due to fuel shortages.

Tactical Stockpiling Offers Limited Relief

Despite these setbacks, Pakistan has reportedly been stockpiling ammunition in key storage sites near the India-Pakistan border. This move may offer some short-term tactical flexibility. However, analysts argue it is unlikely to mitigate the larger strategic vulnerability posed by the overall ammunition shortfall.

Strategic Implications

Pakistan’s decision to prioritize arms exports comes at a time of rising regional tensions. This decision has left Pakistan in a precarious defense posture. Military analysts warn that if hostilities arise with India, the country’s reduced artillery capacity could be a critical weakness.
