Bangladesh Presses Pakistan for 1971 Apology, $4.5 Billion in Outstanding Dues During First High-Level Talks in 15 Years

In a significant diplomatic development, Bangladesh has asked Pakistan for a formal apology over the 1971 Liberation War. It also requested a settlement of financial claims amounting to $4.5 billion. The demands were made during the first Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held between the two nations in 15 years.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin stated that unresolved issues from the past must be addressed. This is necessary to build a meaningful and stable partnership between the two countries. He spoke to media at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He emphasized the importance of resolving longstanding matters. This is essential to pave the way for improved ties.

The consultations were hosted at the State Guesthouse Padma. They marked a renewed attempt to revive diplomatic engagement between the South Asian neighbors. This occurred after a long hiatus. Pakistan was represented by its Foreign Secretary, Amna Baloch, who led her delegation in the talks.

Md Jashim Uddin noted that Pakistan responded positively during the discussions. They indicated a willingness to remain engaged on these critical issues. “Their delegation showed interest in continuing dialogue. Our intention was to ensure our concerns were clearly presented,” he added.

Bangladesh highlighted its financial claims related to pre-1971 assets. These include foreign aid shares, unpaid provident funds, and savings schemes. Collectively, they amount to $4.52 billion.

Another major topic on the agenda was the potential launch of direct flights between the two countries, aimed at fostering closer connectivity and people-to-people ties.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is set to visit Dhaka on April 27–28, marking the first visit by a top Pakistani diplomat to Bangladesh since 2012. During the recent FOC, Amna Baloch also held separate meetings with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain to explore mutual cooperation.

The resumption of dialogue comes as both countries signal readiness to re-establish ties and tackle outstanding bilateral concerns.
