Elon Musk, who was, until recently, a part of Trump’s administration, has now started his own political party. Naming it the ‘America Party’, the tech billionaire aims to challenge what he calls the country’s “one-party system.”
The world’s richest person, Elon Musk, was Trump’s biggest political donor in the 2024 election. He also led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The department aimed to cut down on government spending. It also focused on reducing government jobs. But he had a falling out with Trump soon after.
Musk becomes the new opposition
Mr. Musk has clashed with Mr. Trump over the president’s massive domestic spending plan, saying it would explode the U.S. debt, and vowed to do everything in his power to defeat lawmakers who voted for it. This was with regards to Trump’s ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’.

He has now created the so-called America Party. It is his own political framework. Through this, he aims to achieve his objective of lower spending.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.” The SpaceX and Tesla boss posted this on X. It is the social media platform that he owns.
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” In the same post, Musk said, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party. You shall have it!”
The will of the nation
Earlier, on July 4 during US Independence Day celebrations, Musk posted a poll. He asked if Independence Day is the perfect time to ask for independence from the two-party system. Some would call it a uniparty system. Should we create the America Party?” The poll results showed 65.4% voting “Yes” and 34.6% voting “No.” The yes-or-no survey earned more than 1.2 million responses. Mr. Musk also shared a meme depicting a two-headed snake and the caption “End the Uniparty.”
There have been strong opinions about the “One Big, Beautiful Bill”. Economists estimate the bill will add $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.
Musk strongly opposed the legislation and slammed it as “debt slavery.” He also criticized Republican lawmakers who supported it despite campaigning on fiscal restraint. He soon pledged to create a new political party aimed at challenging those he accused of hypocrisy.
Trump attacks Musk
Musk criticized Trump outspokenly. In response, Trump lashed back. He threatened to strip federal funding from Musk’s companies. He even suggested possible deportation. “We’ll have to take a look,” the president said. Reporters asked if he would consider deporting Musk. Musk was born in South Africa and became a US citizen in 2002.
Musk’s Political Battle Plan
On Friday after posting the poll, Mr. Musk presented a potential political battle plan. The aim is to target vulnerable House and Senate seats. This could allow him to become “the deciding vote” on key legislation.
“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats. Another way is to focus on 8 to 10 House districts,” Mr. Musk posted on X.
All 435 US House seats are up for grabs every two years. About one third of the Senate’s 100 members are elected every two years. These Senators serve six-year terms.
Some observers were quick to point out how third-party campaigns have historically split the vote. Businessman Ross Perot’s independent presidential run in 1992 did this when it helped doom George H.W. Bush’s re-election bid. This resulted in Democrat Bill Clinton’s victory.
“You are pulling a Ross Perot, and I don’t like it,” one X user wrote to Mr. Musk.
