New York/Islamabad, June 2025 — Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir is facing international ridicule. A digital billboard in New York’s Times Square labeled him a “Fraud Marshal.” It publicly accused him and other senior leaders of corruption and political manipulation. The campaign, reportedly initiated by members of the Pakistani diaspora, has ignited widespread debate on social media.
Times Square Turns Into a Stage for Protest
A video clip of a truck-mounted digital billboard circulating in the heart of Manhattan has gone viral. The display showcased a series of messages. The messages denounced General Munir, as well as former President Asif Ali Zardari and ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. They accused the trio of manipulating Pakistan’s political system for personal gain.
Many see the campaign as an embarrassing moment for Pakistan’s top brass. This is especially true given its location at one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks.
Key Messages on the Billboard
The scrolling visuals included several striking accusations:
- “The Deceiver & His Two Crooks” — featuring images of Munir, Zardari, and Sharif.
- “Illegally Detained for 2 Years” — showing former Prime Minister Imran Khan behind bars.
- “Fraud Marshal”, “Liar”, and “Will Do Anything for Self-Interest” — directed at General Munir.
- “Real Hero Standing With Imran Khan” — portraying Khan as the people’s champion.
- “Good Work Makes You Stand Tall, Not Fake Titles” — mocking Munir’s ceremonial promotion.
Operation Sindoor: The Military Fallout
This public outcry comes after India’s Operation Sindoor. This was a precision strike launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir. The attack claimed 26 lives. The Indian Air Force targeted terrorist infrastructure linked to groups like LeT, JeM, Hizbul Mujahideen, and TRF inside Pakistan. They also targeted infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) between May 6 and 10.
Over 100 militants, including senior commanders, were eliminated, severely denting Pakistan’s militant support networks. Observers say Pakistan’s heavy losses have impacted the military’s reputation. Additionally, its subsequent request for a ceasefire has added to the scrutiny, particularly concerning General Munir.

Promotion Sparks Controversy Amid Setbacks
The decision to elevate Munir to the ceremonial rank of Field Marshal has sparked strong disapproval during this crisis. This title has not been awarded in Pakistan since 1959. Opponents argue that Munir has been rewarded despite failures. They brand the promotion as symbolic of a deeper crisis of accountability in Pakistan’s military leadership.
Online, critics have dubbed him the “Failed Marshal,” fueling a narrative of incompetence and misgovernance.
Imran Khan’s Incarceration: A Flashpoint of Dissent
Imran Khan remains at the center of the backlash. He was arrested in May 2023 on charges including corruption. These charges also involve alleged state secrecy violations. His supporters, however, see the case as politically motivated. They blame General Munir and the military establishment for orchestrating a crackdown on Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Tensions between Khan and Munir are well-documented, dating back to Munir’s brief tenure as ISI chief under Khan’s premiership. Their soured relationship reportedly escalated after Munir became army chief in late 2022. This led to Khan’s removal from power. A series of legal challenges have effectively barred him from returning to politics.
Diaspora Voices Amplify Dissent Internationally
Imran Khan remains a figure of immense popularity, even though he faces imprisonment and a severe clampdown on PTI leaders. This support is particularly strong among overseas Pakistanis. The Times Square protest is the latest in a series of symbolic international gestures. Diaspora groups aim to highlight what they see as the military’s undue interference in civilian affairs.
To them, the billboard is not just a protest. It’s a global message of defiance. They allege there is a corrupt alliance between the military and political elite.
