Myanmar Earthquake Unleashes Energy Equivalent to 334 Atomic Bombs: US Geologist

The devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday released energy comparable to more than 300 atomic bombs. This is according to American geologist Jess Phoenix. Speaking to CNN, she estimated that the seismic force unleashed by the tremor was equivalent to 334 atomic bombs.

Aftershocks Expected for Months

Phoenix warned that aftershocks could persist for several months due to ongoing tectonic activity in the region. She explained that the Indian tectonic plate continues to push against the Eurasian plate beneath Myanmar. This push maintains seismic pressure. It could trigger further tremors.

The death toll from the earthquake has surpassed 1,600, with thousands more injured and displaced. Many fear that the true extent of the devastation is still unknown. Communication disruptions and logistical challenges make accessing affected areas difficult.

Civil War and Communication Blackout Hindering Relief Efforts

The relief response has been significantly hampered by Myanmar’s ongoing civil war and an information blackout, Phoenix noted. The country has been ruled by a military junta since February 2021. It has faced political instability. This situation makes coordination of aid efforts more difficult.

The junta’s leader has issued an appeal for international assistance, acknowledging the scale of the disaster. However, due to political tensions and restricted access, many international relief agencies are struggling to provide aid.

India Steps Forward with “Operation Brahma”

India has been one of the first countries to respond, launching a humanitarian aid mission named “Operation Brahma.” As part of its relief efforts, India has sent essential supplies, including:

  • Blankets, tarpaulins, and sleeping bags for displaced families
  • Hygiene kits and food packets to support survivors
  • Solar lamps and kitchen sets to aid in temporary settlements
  • A search and rescue team equipped with specialized equipment
  • A medical unit to provide urgent care to the injured

Impact Beyond Myanmar: Deaths Reported in Thailand

The powerful earthquake was felt across multiple countries in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, India, Bangladesh, and China. In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, at least 17 people lost their lives as buildings swayed and infrastructure sustained damage.

A Long Road to Recovery

As Myanmar grapples with the aftermath of the quake, ongoing rescue operations and relief efforts remain a priority. Experts believe that further assessment of the damage will take time due to Myanmar’s geopolitical situation and rugged terrain.

Seismic activity might continue. Authorities and aid organizations are urging for long-term support. This support will help affected communities rebuild. It will also aid in recovery from one of the deadliest earthquakes in the region’s history.
