Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Expresses Willingness for Peace Talks with India During Iran Visit

Call for Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions

During his ongoing multi-nation diplomatic tour, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke from Iran. He stated that his country is open to peace talks with India. Sharif emphasized a desire for dialogue on all issues, including Kashmir and water-sharing. He noted that Pakistan seeks a peaceful resolution. However, they are also prepared to respond to conflict if necessary.

Strategic Shift After Operation Sindoor

Sharif’s remarks come after India’s assertive military response in Operation Sindoor. This operation was conducted from May 7 to 10. During this time, Indian forces targeted terror and military installations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation started after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. This attack claimed the lives of 26 Indian tourists.

India’s Firm Stance on PoK and Terrorism

India, however, has maintained a clear position. There will be no talks with Pakistan. Talks must focus on the return of PoK and the eradication of terrorism. Officials in New Delhi have indicated their demands for any future engagement with Islamabad. Islamabad must take concrete steps against terror infrastructure.

Pakistan’s Diplomatic Outreach

The Pakistani Prime Minister is currently on a regional tour from May 25 to 30, covering Türkiye, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan. His statements in Iran are part of a strategy to regain diplomatic ground. Pakistan has become increasingly isolated internationally. This is especially true following India’s proactive military actions.

Conflicting Claims on Recent Clashes

Despite offering talks, Sharif claimed that Pakistan emerged victorious in the recent four-day confrontation with India. This statement contrasts with reports. These reports indicate significant losses to Pakistani military assets during India’s precision strikes.

Ceasefire in Place, But Tensions Remain

Following the cross-border strikes, both countries agreed to a ceasefire, temporarily halting active hostilities. However, given the stern position taken by India, prospects for renewed dialogue will depend heavily on Pakistan’s actions on the ground, especially concerning terrorism

This development adds another layer to the complex relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Regional stability continues to shape their diplomatic narratives. International scrutiny also influences their diplomatic actions.
