Defence Minister Approves AMCA Programme Model to Boost Indigenous Aerospace Capability

New Delhi, 27 May 2025 – In a landmark move, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the execution model. This aims to strengthen India’s defence self-reliance. This is for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The initiative represents a significant step in the country’s efforts. It aims to build a robust and self-sustaining aerospace ecosystem under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ mission.

AMCA Programme to Be Driven Through Industry Collaboration

The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will lead the execution of the AMCA programme. It will collaborate closely with Indian industry partners. This public-private model is designed to harness the technical expertise, production capacity, and innovation potential of India’s domestic aerospace sector.

The model envisions a seamless integration between government-led research institutions and private manufacturing firms. They will work together to develop and build the AMCA prototype. This prototype is a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet equipped with cutting-edge avionics and multirole capabilities.

A Big Leap Toward Self-Reliance in Aerospace

The AMCA programme is seen as a pivotal step in achieving Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence technologies. This is especially true in the highly strategic aerospace segment. The indigenous development of such a sophisticated combat aircraft will reduce dependency on foreign suppliers. It will also place India among a select group of nations with advanced fighter jet manufacturing capabilities.

“This approval is a testimony to India’s growing confidence and competence in defence manufacturing. A senior defence official involved in the project said the AMCA will be a symbol of technological strength. It will also represent national pride.”

Strategic Importance of AMCA

The AMCA is designed to meet the future requirements of the Indian Air Force and potentially the Indian Navy. It will feature stealth characteristics and supercruise capability. It will also have advanced sensors and weapons integration. These features make it a critical asset for air superiority, ground attack, and electronic warfare roles.

By investing in indigenous design and development, India is opening avenues for technological innovation. It is generating employment. There is also export potential in the aerospace domain.

Next Steps in Programme Execution

With the execution model now approved, the ADA will begin detailed coordination with selected industry partners to initiate prototype development. This phase will involve finalizing design specifications, establishing production frameworks, and conducting necessary trials and evaluations.

The successful development of the AMCA prototype will represent a significant milestone in India’s defence modernisation roadmap. It will reinforce the country’s position as a rising aerospace power.

As India continues to prioritise indigenous innovation, the AMCA programme stands out. It is a bold and strategic investment in the nation’s long-term defence. It also contributes to the technological future.
