Russia Unleashes Massive Drone and Missile Attack on Ukraine, Killing Six

Russia launched a massive barrage across Ukraine overnight. It included over 400 drones and 40 missiles. It was one of the most intense aerial assaults since the start of the war. This resulted in at least six deaths. There were around 80 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials.

Widespread Destruction and Explosions Captured on Video

Video footage from the attack showed blinding explosions and thunderous impacts, lighting up the night skies across multiple regions. The assault, which spanned several hours, targeted six Ukrainian regions, leaving residential buildings and infrastructure in ruins.

Ukraine’s Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat confirmed that 407 drones and 44 ballistic or cruise missiles were launched. Air defences managed to intercept around 30 missiles. They also intercepted up to 200 drones. However, others struck populated areas. These areas included Kyiv, Lutsk, and Chernihiv.

Kyiv Responds with Outrage: “Russia Does Not Want Peace”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack on social media, stating, “This is not a country seeking peace. Russia doesn’t change its stripes.”

The strikes followed a recent Ukrainian drone offensive targeting Russian airfields. This coincided with remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump. He suggested it might be better to “let Ukraine and Russia fight for a while” before pursuing new peace efforts.

Rescue Workers Among the Victims

In Kyiv, emergency responders were killed while assisting residents during the attack, Ukraine’s Interior Ministry confirmed. Fires broke out in several districts of the capital, leaving over 2,000 homes without electricity.

Other cities also suffered: drone debris caused blackouts in Ternopil, Lviv, and Khmelnytskyi, severely impacting civilian infrastructure.

Russia Claims Military Targets Hit, Ukraine Strikes Back

Moscow’s Defence Ministry stated that the attacks were aimed at military infrastructure, including arms depots and drone production facilities. However, reports from Ukraine indicate that civilian areas bore the brunt of the destruction.

Ukrainian drones retaliated by striking sites in Moscow and surrounding regions. They damaged industrial facilities and reportedly injured three individuals. Russia claimed it intercepted 174 drones and three Neptune missiles, while also reporting railway sabotage in Belgorod.

Peace Talks at a Standstill

Although two rounds of direct negotiations have taken place, no progress has been made. Ukraine has offered a 30-day ceasefire. It also proposed a direct meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin. However, Russia has dismissed the proposal. It maintains demands that Kyiv deems unacceptable.

The Institute for the Study of War criticized Moscow’s diplomatic posturing. They stated that Russia is falsely presenting itself as open to good-faith negotiations. At the same time, it continues its aggressive military campaign.

Outlook: Tensions Escalate Amid Dimming Hopes for Diplomacy

As air raids increase in frequency and intensity, hopes for an immediate diplomatic resolution remain bleak. The latest strikes underscore the deteriorating security situation and raise concerns about further escalation in the weeks ahead.
