Russia’s Population Crisis: Population on Decline, Government Tries Various Stabilising Measures

Russia has been recognized not just for its power since the time of the Soviet Union. It is also known for the proportion of women in its society. The number of women was more than the number of men. Even some folk songs encapsulate this fact. Finding a groom was a heavy task for even the most beautiful Russian women. Many went to foreign nations to marry, and settled there.

But President Vladimir Putin says things have changed a lot in the past 100 years. The demographic imbalance of 9 men for 10 women is a statistic of the past. Today, Russia is facing a decline in the female population.

What does data say?

Rosstat, Russia’s central statistical service, has released a preliminary population estimate. The estimate is as of January 1, 2025, and is available on its website. According to this data, the estimated total population of Russia as of January 1, 2025 was 14,60,28,325 or about 14.6 crore. The population has declined from 2024 by 0.08%.

Russian demographer Alexei Raksha provided data on childbirth in 2025. In the first three months, Russian women gave birth to only 294,000 children. This is the lowest birth rate in Russia in 225 years. Such figures show that Russia’s fertility rate is decreasing, which will increase their mortality rate. This is the same problem that China is facing.

Regional Pockets of Growth

The overall population of Russia is declining. However, regional population growth trends have also been observed.  In Moscow, Leningrad, and Ingushetia regions, the population has increased gradually. The Russian Government is also tackling the issue through its schemes. It is giving incentives to mothers to bear more children.

School girls being rewarded for giving birth

In Russia, a student can benefit from an interesting government scheme. A 22 weeks pregnant women needs to register at a government maternity clinic. She will get 1 lakh rubles in cash. In this way, the government will bear the expenses of giving birth. Further, in many areas, a reward of 1.5 to 10 lakh rupees is being given for bearing more babies.
