Trump Administration Signals Stronger US-India Ties

Admiration for Indian Economic Drive

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick spoke at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit in Washington. He praised India’s economic resilience and potential. He emphasized that the “drive and ambition” of India’s population are key factors behind the nation’s sustained economic growth.

Lutnick remarked, “The strength of any economy lies in the determination of its people. In India, the core population is highly entrepreneurial, which is why the country’s economy continues to thrive.”

Trump’s Stance: ‘America First’ But Not ‘America Alone’

Lutnick highlighted that former President Donald Trump remains committed to maintaining strong ties with allies, including India. “President Trump believes in ‘America First.’ However, he does not believe in ‘America only.’” He noted that Trump holds deep admiration for India. Trump envisions a strong bilateral relationship.

Indian Talent and the ‘Trump Gold Card’ Concept

Addressing immigration and talent mobility, Lutnick acknowledged the significant role Indian professionals play in the U.S. economy, especially in leadership roles across major companies.

He introduced the idea of a proposed “Trump Gold Card.” It is a $5 million fast-track visa akin to a Green Card. This could offer a streamlined path for foreign entrepreneurs and investors to live and work in the United States. “This will create new avenues for global talent, especially from India, to participate in both economies,” he said.

The card, according to Lutnick, would offer flexible tax options and be part of a broader category of “international entrepreneurs.”

Strengthening Manufacturing and Trade Relations

On trade and industry cooperation, Lutnick expressed optimism about enhanced U.S.-India collaboration. He emphasized America’s aim to revive domestic manufacturing. He also indicated that India would be a key partner in producing a wide range of goods.

“There are many sectors where India can play a leading role. Trade agreements can provide a more favorable environment for Indian manufacturers. They do this by offering better tariff terms compared to many other countries,” he said.

Collaboration in Emerging Technologies

Lutnick also spoke about future opportunities in tech-driven sectors. He noted the Trump team’s plan to deepen collaboration with strategic allies like India. This will focus on fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data infrastructure.

He stated, “We want to partner with our allies in the AI revolution. India is a natural fit for this cooperation, especially in building data centers and tech ecosystems.”

Looking Ahead

In conclusion, Lutnick reaffirmed the Trump administration’s interest in enhancing US-India ties across multiple sectors. He described the two nations as natural partners in the global economic and technological landscape.
