Trump Announces 26% Reciprocal Tariff on India, Calls PM Modi a ‘Great Friend’

US Introduces New Trade Tariffs

Former US President Donald Trump announced a 26% “discounted” reciprocal tariff on India. The announcement occurred during the “Make America Wealthy Again” event. The event was held at the White House Rose Garden on April 2, 2025. While addressing the audience, Trump described the day as “Liberation Day.” This marked a turning point for American industry. It also marked a shift in trade policies.

He acknowledged that the newly imposed tariffs are not entirely reciprocal. He emphasized that they were a step toward fair trade practices.

Tariff Disparities Between India and the US

As part of the announcement, Trump showcased a chart. It compared tariffs imposed by countries like India, China, the UK, and the European Union. These were set against new US tariff rates on these nations.

According to the chart, India had been imposing 52% tariffs, which included currency manipulation and trade barriers. In response, the US has now introduced a 26% reciprocal tariff.

“India has been very tough on us. The Prime Minister just visited, and he’s a great friend, but I told him, ‘You’re not treating us fairly.’ For years, India has been charging us 52% in tariffs, while we imposed almost nothing. It was only when I took office seven years ago that we started addressing unfair trade policies,” Trump remarked.

Higher Tariffs on Motorcycles and Automobiles

Trump also addressed the disparities in motorcycle and automobile tariffs. He highlighted that while the US charges only 2.4% on motorcycle imports, other nations impose significantly higher duties:

  • Thailand: 60%
  • India: 70%
  • Vietnam: 75%

Similarly, the US has historically charged just 2.5% on foreign-made automobiles, while other regions impose far steeper tariffs:

  • European Union: 10% tariff, plus a 20% VAT
  • India: 70% tariff
  • Japan & South Korea: Non-monetary trade restrictions

Trump emphasized that these new tariffs aim to correct long-standing trade imbalances and create a fairer environment for American businesses. The announcement signals a shift in US trade policy, reinforcing a more aggressive stance on reciprocal tariffs.
