Trump Hopeful of Ending Russia – Ukraine War after Meeting with Zelensky at White House

A power packed meeting was organised by US President Donald Trump towards ending Russia-Ukraine War. Along with Trump, Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and seven European leaders attended the meeting at White House, Washington.

The meeting ended on an optimistic note. Many leaders feel optimistic about aligning with Trump on ending the war. They also want to ensure that their concerns are not sidelined.

Key Stakeholders

Trump and Zelensky held an initial meeting. They had talks before they were joined in a discussion with key European leaders. These leaders demonstrated Western unity and support for Ukraine. Present at the talks were the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Commission and NATO.

Discussion Points: Security Guarantees and Humanitarian Concerns

Zelensky said the discussion covered security guarantees and humanitarian concerns. Those included tentative plans for Ukraine to purchase American weapons through European funding. Ukraine would also manufacture drones, and some of these drones would be purchased by the US. They did not discuss redrawing Ukrainian territory, said the NATO chief. Zelensky said he had a long discussion with Trump over a map of Russian-captured territories in his country. He “argued” with Trump “about the percentage of territory held” on the map.

Trump’s call to Putin

Trump paused his meeting with Zelensky and the leaders to phone Putin. He told the Russian leader what had been decided. The Finnish president said it was a decision “coordinated” by the European leaders. The Europeans were not present for the call. A Kremlin aide said the meeting was “very constructive.” Putin expressed support for “direct negotiations” between Ukraine and Russia.

Talks of Tri-lateral Meeting

Trump said he has begun arranging a meeting between Putin and Zelensky. After that bilateral meeting takes place, Trump could join a trilateral meeting with the leaders. Zelensky said he is ready for “any format” of a meeting with the Russian president.

Date for Meeting

US President Donald Trump in his post on social media did not confirm any date. Also indicating he may or may not be a part of the meeting two leaders. In the meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirms Zelenskyy-Putin meet within 2 weeks.

Intent for Successful Peace Talks

The atmosphere was far more collegial than the shouting match in February. That was the last time Zelensky was in the Oval Office. This time, Zelensky appeared in a smart suit. He did not wear the usual military-style clothing that had displeased Trump last time. He also brought a letter for Trump from Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska. She thanked US first lady Melania Trump for her message to Putin about children suffering during the war.
