Mohammad Yunus Hints at Resignation Amid Political Unrest in Bangladesh:

Feeling Like a “Hostage”, Says Interim Leader

Bangladesh’s interim government head, Mohammad Yunus, has expressed a strong desire to step down from his position. He cites increasing political challenges. He also notes a lack of cooperation from major political parties. During a recent advisory council meeting in Dhaka, Yunus voiced his frustration. He stated he felt like a “hostage.” He was unable to perform his duties effectively under current circumstances.

Nahid Islam, a student leader and head of the National Citizen Party, reported that Yunus might resign. “He said he feels trapped and believes he cannot continue working in the present situation,” Islam told local media.

Growing Political Divide Complicates Governance

Sources say Yunus is disillusioned by the lack of consensus among political parties. This situation has made it increasingly difficult for him to lead the interim administration. “Until there is political agreement, I cannot function properly,” he reportedly said.

Yunus should not remain in power if he does not have the backing of political factions. Nahid Islam added that this support is crucial. If Yunus does not have political backing, he should not remain in power. Nahid Islam added that there is little justification for Yunus to remain in power. He doesn’t have the backing of political factions. “If parties want him to resign and offer no assurance, there’s no reason for him to continue,” Islam said.

Military Tensions Over Border Agreement

The situation has been further complicated by tensions between the Bangladeshi military and Yunus’s administration. Reports suggest that the interim government started a covert deal with the United States. The aim was to establish a humanitarian corridor along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. This reportedly angered Bangladesh Army Chief General Wakar-uz-Zaman. He issued a stern ultimatum to Yunus to conduct national elections by December.

This disagreement has added to the strain. The military and government are now seemingly at odds over key national security issues.

Widespread Protests and Political Backlash

Yunus is currently under intense political and public pressure. Protests are being led by student groups and opposition parties demanding elections be held by the end of the year. Demonstrators have also called for some officials to be removed from the interim government. These include figures like Mahfuz Asif and Khalilur Rahman.

Background: Yunus Took Charge After Sheikh Hasina’s Exit

Mohammad Yunus became the head of the interim government on August 8 last year. This followed the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina reportedly fled to India after the upheaval. Yunus’s appointment came just three days after the political turnover, which was seen as a significant shift in Bangladesh’s leadership.

Uncertain Future Ahead

The political environment is deteriorating. There is no clear consensus among factions. Yunus’s potential resignation could trigger another wave of instability in the region. Neither the interim leader nor the military has officially confirmed the resignation. However, signs point toward a major political transition in the near future.
