India has taken a significant leap in defence technology. The country is developing sixth-generation stealth fighter jets under the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. This initiative follows the successful precision operations carried out under Operation Sindoor, underscoring India’s strategic push towards indigenous defence capabilities.
AMCA Mark-1 and Mark-2: A Two-Phase Strategy
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is currently working on two variants of the AMCA—Mark-1 and Mark-2.
- Mark-1 is being developed to address the immediate shortfall in India’s fighter fleet. It will serve as a bridge to advanced combat capabilities.
- Mark-2, on the other hand, is expected to integrate features associated with sixth-generation fighter aircraft. These features include stealth, advanced propulsion, and AI-enabled systems.

Bridging the Fighter Jet Shortage
Currently, India’s combat readiness is hampered by a shortage of fighter squadrons. Against the required strength of 42–43 squadrons, the IAF has only around 30. This translates to a need for approximately 200–300 additional aircraft, which the AMCA project aims to fulfill.
India’s current air fleet includes 4.5-generation fighters like the Rafale and Su-30MKI. China, an adversary, has been deploying fifth-generation aircraft such as the Chengdu J-20. There are also reports of potential transfers to Pakistan. The urgency for more advanced jets has grown considerably.
Engine Development and Delays
The AMCA Mark-1 will be powered by the F414 engine from General Electric. However, supply delays have reportedly pushed the timeline back by nearly a year.
For Mark-2, India plans to use an entirely indigenous 120 kN engine. The engine is developed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) under DRDO. Collaborations with foreign partners like Rolls-Royce, Safran, or GE are being considered to expedite the engine development process.
Why a 120 kN Engine Matters
An engine rated at 120 kilonewtons can produce thrust exceeding 27,000 pounds, offering:
- 30% greater range
- 20% better acceleration
This significantly enhances the aircraft’s strike capability and evasiveness—critical features for stealth and survivability in combat. Such performance benchmarks are key in developing aircraft that are nearly invisible to radar systems.

Sixth-Generation Combat Features
The Mark-2 variant is expected to incorporate cutting-edge sixth-generation technology, which may include:

- Advanced cockpit systems for multitasking and strategic operations
These features are intended to give pilots a tactical advantage, especially in high-stakes scenarios.
Enhanced Stealth and Supersonic Capabilities
A significant focus of the Mark-2 variant is stealth enhancement. Improvements will involve:
- The use of radar-absorbent materials
- Sensor fusion systems to reduce radar cross-section
- Optimized aerodynamics and airflow management
- Incorporation of supersonic cruising (supercruise) features
These upgrades will make the aircraft more difficult to detect and engage, ensuring higher survivability in contested environments.
Global Impact and Future Prospects
Experts believe that once the AMCA Mark-2 is fully developed, India will solidify its defence capabilities. It will also emerge as a potential exporter in the global fighter jet market. This would mark India’s entry into an elite group of nations—the US, China, and Russia—capable of developing sixth-generation combat aircraft.
In the long run, the AMCA project is expected to drive economic benefits through international sales. It will also leverage technology transfers. This makes it both a strategic and commercial milestone for the country.
