Predicting who might replace Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India involves speculation. This depends on various factors like political developments, party dynamics, and election outcomes. As of March 22, 2025, Modi is in his third term. It began in June 2024 and is set to end in 2029. He will be 78 years old then. There’s no official retirement age in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) constitution. Discussions about succession often arise due to an informal guideline from 2014. This guideline suggests leaders retire at 75. However, Modi himself has not confirmed adhering to this.
Several prominent figures within the BJP are frequently mentioned as potential successors based on their influence, popularity, and leadership roles:
Other names, like S. Jaishankar (External Affairs Minister) or Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam Chief Minister), surface occasionally. However, they lack the national stature. They also do not have the survey backing of the top contenders. Outside the BJP, opposition leaders like Rahul Gandhi (Congress) or Mamata Banerjee (TMC) could theoretically vie for the PM post. However, this would require a significant shift in electoral fortunes. This shift seems unlikely given the BJP’s dominance as of now.
Ultimately, Modi’s replacement will hinge on the BJP’s internal decisions, public sentiment, and the 2029 election results. For now, Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath stand out as the most likely successors within the party. Shah’s organizational strength and Adityanath’s populist appeal give them an edge.
