Army Eases Instagram Rules, Retains Strict No-Post Norms

Instagram Allowed Only in View Mode

The Indian Army has updated its social media rules to allow soldiers and officers to access Instagram. They can only view and monitor content. Interaction is not permitted. The Directorate General of Military Intelligence (DGMI) has issued revised instructions. Personnel are barred from posting, commenting, liking, or sharing on the platform. They are only allowed passive use.

Policy Change and Scope

The latest order, issued by Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), takes immediate effect. It modifies earlier social media guidelines. These guidelines had completely barred Instagram use by serving personnel. Instagram is now in the restricted-use category. It is alongside platforms such as YouTube and X. These platforms are permitted only for consuming information without contributing user-generated content.

Cybersecurity Responsibilities on Individuals

The Army has reiterated that every user will be personally responsible for secure use of social media. They must ensure correct application and comply with policies when using digital tools. Any breach of the updated instructions can attract disciplinary action. Personnel have been cautioned to remain extremely careful. This is important while accessing cloud-based storage or synchronising data across devices.

Ban on Risky Digital Tools

The revised advisory takes into account wider cyber and operational security concerns. It discourages the use of VPN services, torrent platforms, and pirated or cracked software by Army personnel. Anonymous web proxies and unverified or suspicious websites are also discouraged. These digital tools are seen as potential gateways for malware, data theft, and hostile surveillance. They could compromise sensitive information or operational deployments.

Rationale Behind Controlled Digital Access

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has previously underlined that smartphones have become a near-inevitable part of a soldier’s life. They help with staying connected with family and accessing information. However, they must be used in a controlled, security-conscious manner. He has stressed the importance of troops remaining informed online. They should not react impulsively. There is a clear line between digital awareness and unregulated engagement on social media.

Balancing Connectivity and Security

Officials say the Instagram relaxation reflects an effort to keep personnel informed in a fast-changing information space. It also aims to preserve strict safeguards around operational security and sensitive data. The Army aims to allow limited, view-only access under clear do’s and don’ts. This strategy seeks to balance modern connectivity needs with its core mandate. The core mandate involves protecting missions, infrastructure, and troop safety.
