GE Aerospace Delivers First F404-IN20 Engine to HAL After Prolonged Delay

First Engine Delivered After Two-Year Setback

GE Aerospace has officially delivered the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). These engines are intended for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-1A program. This delivery comes after a two-year delay. It impacts both HAL’s production schedules. It also affects the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) fleet expansion plans. Shawn Warren is the General Manager for Combat & Trainer Engines at GE Aerospace. He described the handover on March 25. It is a key milestone in the company’s long-standing partnership with India’s defense sector.

Production Challenges and Acceleration Plans

The delay had created a bottleneck in Tejas fighter production. With the arrival of the engines, HAL is preparing to ramp up manufacturing. HAL has restructured operations at its Bengaluru facility, adding a parallel assembly line to speed up output. The goal is to produce 16 Tejas Mk-1A jets annually. This aims to fulfill the IAF’s order of 83 aircraft by 2028. An official from HAL noted that despite the setbacks, the company has optimized its assembly lines. This optimization is to ensure timely deliveries going forward.

Features of the Tejas Mk-1A Fighter

The Tejas Mk-1A is an enhanced variant of the earlier Mk-1 model. It is equipped with advanced radar systems. It also features superior avionics and upgraded weapon platforms. It plays a crucial role in reducing the IAF’s reliance on aging fighter jets such as the MiG-21 and Jaguar. The timely deployment of these jets will significantly enhance India’s air defense capabilities.

Revival of Engine Production

GE Aerospace highlighted its long-standing collaboration with India’s aerospace sector, dating back to the 1980s. The F404-IN20 engine was specifically selected for the Tejas LCA program in 2004. It proved its compatibility during its maiden test flight in 2008. By 2016, GE had delivered 65 engines to HAL. Earlier orders were completed. No new contracts were obtained. Therefore, the production line for these engines was shut down.

Restarting the Production Line

The 2021 contract for 99 new engines required GE Aerospace to revive the dormant F404-IN20 production line after five years. The company undertook the complex process of restarting the manufacturing operation and re-engaging the global supply network for critical components. GE stated that it continues working closely with its suppliers. This ensures smooth, high-quality production. It also guarantees timely deliveries for the remaining engines.

Looking Ahead

The first engine has been delivered. Now, both GE Aerospace and HAL are focused on meeting the urgent needs of the Indian Air Force. The combined efforts are expected to accelerate the Tejas Mk-1A program. These efforts will strengthen India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem. They will also enhance air combat capabilities in the years ahead.
