Indian Navy Assets Arrive at Indonesia Amid Prospective BrahMos Deal

India and Indonesia continue to deepen their defence cooperation

A series of high-profile military engagements underscores their growing strategic partnership. The latest development sees the arrival of INS Shardul and P8I maritime surveillance plane in Bali, Indonesia. They will join in the International Fleet Review (IFR) 2025 and the Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo. This further highlights their commitment to maritime security and regional stability.

These engagements come at a crucial time. Negotiations for the sale of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to Indonesia are reportedly in their final stages. Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, visited India. He toured the BrahMos headquarters. This visit indicates strong interest in acquiring the advanced missile system. The potential deal is estimated at around $200-300 million. It would mark a significant step in India’s defense exports. The deal would also enhance Indonesia’s maritime strike capabilities.

The IFR 2025 was reviewed by President Prabowo Subianto. It brings together naval forces from across the world. This reinforces Indonesia’s strategic role in the Indo-Pacific. As part of the event, Indian naval personnel will engage in high-level security discussions. They will conduct tactical exercises. They will also take part in environmental initiatives. These activities reflect India’s “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR) vision.

INS Shardul and P8I will join Exercise Komodo after IFR 2025. This is a multilateral naval drill focusing on interoperability. It enhances regional maritime security. This follows India’s participation in LA PEROUSE 2025 in Indonesia and signals a continuous military engagement between the two nations.

As India and Indonesia bolster their defense cooperation, the BrahMos deal, if finalized, is a game-changer. It would equip the Indonesian military with one of the world’s most formidable cruise missiles. It would also solidify India’s status as a leading defense exporter.
