India has launched a big blueprint for its defence preparedness keeping in mind future wars. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has released the Technology Perspective and Capability Roadmap 2025 (TPCR-2025). This roadmap will guide the modern needs and technological capabilities of the Indian armed forces for the next 15 years. In this, areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and hypersonic weapons are prioritized. Space warfare and directed energy weapons are also prioritized. Unmanned combat systems (UCAVs) have been given special priority too.

New Strategy for Future Wars
The document clarifies that the nature of modern warfare is changing rapidly. Cyber operations, space war, drones and artificial intelligence are now the new reality of the battlefield. The aim of the Indian forces is to be equipped with these cutting-edge technologies in the coming years. They aim to increase their strength based on self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat).
Boost to Indian Army
The Indian Army has demanded more than 1,800 main battle tanks and 400 light tanks. They have also requested 6 lakh artillery shells. Several unmanned aerial systems (UAVs) are included in the roadmap. Their aim is to increase agility and firepower in the high-tech wars of the future. Navy’s priorities
Upgrades for Indian Navy
The Indian Navy’s plan includes one more aircraft carrier. It also includes 10 next-gen destroyers. There are more than 10 landing platforms. The plan involves advanced helicopters and nuclear-powered systems. These will further strengthen the Navy’s bluewater capability and dominance in the Indian Ocean region.
Air Force’s Preparation
The Indian Air Force has very ambitious plans for the future. This includes 20 stratospheric airships, 350 multi-mission drones, stealth UCAVs, high-power laser systems and directed energy weapons. Apart from this, anti-swarmdrone technology and satellite-based secure communication system have also been given priority.
Indigenization and the Role of the Private Sector
The roadmap clearly states that defence production will be advanced under the Self-reliant India campaign. ‘Make in India’ will be at the center of this advancement. The partnership of private and public sectors will receive further impetus. Participation of MSMEs will also be encouraged. Schemes like iDEX, MAKE, and TDF will be given a push. There is also talk of guiding the industry on future technologies. This guidance will be provided through the ‘Srujan’ portal and the Triveni Bulletin of HQ IDS.
Changes in Defence Procurement
The Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP-2020) has already simplified the complexities of defence acquisition. Now the revised DPM-2009 is also coming soon, which will focus on promoting indigenisation and simplifying procurement policies.
