Strengthening Maritime and Defence Cooperation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his impactful visit to Sri Lanka. Following the visit, Indian Navy warship INS Sahyadri docked at the Port of Colombo. This action reinforces India’s commitment to regional maritime cooperation. The warship, part of the Eastern Fleet, is on operational deployment in the Indian Ocean Region. It serves as a symbol of India’s growing naval outreach. It also highlights defence collaboration with its neighbours.
Deepening Naval Engagement
During its stay, Indian and Sri Lankan naval personnel will participate in professional exchanges. They will also engage in joint exercises. Additionally, operational discussions will be aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and maritime interoperability. This engagement highlights the continuing effort to strengthen defence diplomacy under India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘MAHASAGAR’ initiatives.
A Diplomatic Milestone
Prime Minister Modi returned to India on Sunday. He described the visit as “very productive.” He had detailed discussions with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Multiple bilateral agreements were signed across sectors such as defence, energy, digitalisation, and infrastructure development, underscoring the evolving strategic partnership.
Cultural and Civilisational Bonds Reaffirmed
Expressing gratitude on social media, PM Modi said:
“Deeply grateful to President Dissanayake, the people and Government of Sri Lanka for the warmth extended during my visit. Be it in Colombo or Anuradhapura, this visit has reaffirmed the deep cultural ties. It has also highlighted the spiritual and civilisational connections between our two nations.”
A Step Towards Regional Stability
After participating in the BIMSTEC summit in Thailand, Modi stopped in Sri Lanka. This visit highlights India’s active role in promoting regional security and connectivity. The arrival of INS Sahyadri in Colombo reflects India’s enduring naval commitment to maintaining peace. It ensures maritime safety. It also fosters strong regional partnerships.
